CISOs, Here’s How to Build Your Cyber Defense Layers 👇 Quite often, I meet #CISOs and #CIOs . I ask them to describe their cyber defense architecture, and they often begin discussing... their firewall, NAC, EDR, and other components. Some also elaborate on their implementation of NIST controls. However, that is not what I asked for… 🤷♂️ The concept of defense layers has its origins in "Defense in Depth," a principle utilized in information security. This approach involves implementing multiple layers of security controls throughout an information technology (IT) system (as defined by Wikipedia), drawing inspiration from military strategies. In cybersecurity, this principle is founded on the 7-layer OSI model, albeit with some slight adaptations. To construct effective cyber defense layers, follow these steps: 👍 𝗠𝗮𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘀 (𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮): Identify the locations of your business assets within your IT infrastructure. 👍 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗜𝗧 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: Categorize your IT environments, whether they're segmented or part of a larger data center. 👍 𝗠𝗮𝗽 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗜𝗧 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Define the defense layers for each IT environment, encompassing aspects such as people, network, perimeter, and data security. 👍 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿: Document all components of each defense layer, including security products, procedures, and processes. 👍 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗞𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀: With this framework, evaluate whether your defense layer architecture effectively mitigates the key threat kill chains. 👉 𝘽𝙤𝙣𝙪𝙨 𝙏𝙞𝙥 👈 Keep in mind that a robust cybersecurity architecture involves more than just deploying security products. CISOs, here's a real dilemma to think about, and respond to, during the weekend. A new critical (as defined by MITRE) CVE has been announced for devices that you have on your network. Fortunately, the CVE includes a patch resolution. However, installing that patch requires 3-4 hours downtime of the company's production environment. To install, or not to install? What will be your reasoning to install or not to install? Comments!

CISOs, here's another real dilemma to think about, and respond to, during the long weekend. A mid-size company, with about 1,000 employees, is planning its work plan budget for 2024. Overall, it has been spending on security and has most of the security products you would expect to have in such a company e.g., Firewall, EDR, MFA, etc. How would you recommend splitting the security budget? Where to put the focus? - 70% in existing and new security products - 15% in enforcing processes - 15% in awareness OR maybe - 70% in enforcing processes - 15% in existing and new security products - 15% in awareness How will you plan your budget? CISOs, here's a real dilemma to ponder over the weekend: The infrastructure and security operations teams, which report outside your chain of command (not directly to you, the CISO), are understaffed and overloaded. Your requests to these teams are often ignored. You've also attempted to address the issue with their manager, the CIO, but haven't seen any progress. Management has acknowledged the risks you presented and given you the green light to move forward. However, you're left feeling frustrated and contemplating a job search. What will you do? CISOs, here's a significant misconception to think about, and respond to, during the weekend. Last week, we participated with CISOteria at a cyber conference and met dozens of industry colleagues. It struck me repeatedly the misconception many professionals in our industry have about the role of the 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗳 Information Security Officer (CISO). One argument presented was that CISOs need to be aware of all vulnerabilities and alerts in real-time. My response: no, this falls under the purview of the security operations team. The CISO holds a management role. CISOs need to ensure that the security operations teams are promptly addressing all vulnerabilities and alerts, and intervene in escalated situations as necessary. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗜𝗦𝗢'𝘀 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲.
