Tomorrow's Lunar New Year is an important holiday for Mei-Li (Lili) Huang and her family in Southern California. Drawing relatives from across the globe in age-old traditions, the festivities kick off with cleaning and decorating the family's home space in vibrant red and gold, symbolizing happiness and prosperity.  

Lili's cousins come together, sharing tales and laughter leading up to the New Year's Eve reunion dinner. Her mother makes symbolic dishes like a whole chicken representing unity and oranges to bring good luck and happiness. 

New Year's Day is embraced with new attire and the exchange of "gongxi" greetings and red envelopes to wish health and success. The highlight is the lively backyard party at Lili's aunt's, a gathering of more than a hundred people where family and friends celebrate the zodiac animal year with a pinata.  

Lili reflects, "Growing up in Southern California, I love the 'salad bowl' of different cultures, blending yet maintaining unique identities." 

For the Huang family, the gathering is more than a tradition; it's a reaffirmation of family bonds and the cultural heritage that unites them.
