We all #procrastinate, resist tasks, and have trouble focusing sometimes. But choosing to #focus on a task rather than avoid it can help #students save time, do their best, & feel less stressed. 🤩

Here are powerful tips for overcoming avoidance & focusing on a task:
1. Decide to do the task - motivation comes after you start
2. Commit to an amount of time to focus that feels right for you
3. Limit distractions - find an uncluttered, quiet space & put away your phone
4. Find your purpose - reframe the task as something that will help you grow or help others
5. Bring your mind to the present - breathe
6. Break your task down into steps - small ones
7. Set your timer & begin focusing on the task
8. When time is up, take a break
9. Repeat as needed

Try these out the next time you need to focus. 🎯

Every time we feel #fear & #anxiety, we have the chance to teach our brains one of two things:
1. Yes, we should be afraid of this thing - avoid it at all costs
or
2. No, this thing isn’t so bad - we don’t have to worry about it

When #students avoid the thing they are afraid of, they increase their anxiety and the urge to avoid it next time. If the thing students are afraid of is something like academics, interacting with peers, or participating in a healthy hobby, then avoidance starts to severely limit students’ health & happiness.

The way out of the fear cycle is through challenge. 💪

Reframing fear as a challenge to grow or help others can motivate us to face our fears & decrease our long-term anxiety. 🌱

Try these strategies the next time you’re facing fear + anxiety to break out of the fear cycle. 🔄

When did you learn how to have difficult conversations? 💭

Having #difficultconversations is hard for adults, let alone for #teenagers. Many #students who come to chat with a Clayful Coach realize that they need to have a difficult conversation with a friend, a teacher, or a family member.

In these cases, we will role-play these difficult conversations with the student to help them prepare.
1. Ask them to describe the time + place they imagine this conversation taking place
2. Practice a “positive” conversation where they’re met with acceptance and a resolution
3. Practice a “negative” conversation where they are met with anger, disappointment, and things left unresolved

During role-playing, we invite students to use a tool to scaffold such conversations. It’s a four-part tool that helps students express their needs in a thoughtful and systematic way.

Here’s how the Ask for What You Want tool works:
 1. I notice you have been avoiding me at school lately.
 2. I feel sad when I don’t get to hang out with you
 3. because I need your friendship.
 4. Would you please let me know if something happened and how I can fix it?

Students will often come back to practice these conversations again and again, each time trying new things out in the role-play. Sometimes students have the conversation in real life and sometimes they don’t. Either way, the strategies, skills, and confidence they build along the way are useful.
