✍  NEW REPORT - Public Guarantees for Cleantech Manufacturing: How to free up working capital for EU clean technologies ✍
 
In new research, we tackle one of the thorniest and yet under-discussed challenges for fast-growing European cleantech innovators ready to industrialise: the lack of access to bank guarantees. Our in-depth interviews with actors across the cleantech innovation eco-system revealed that bank #guarantees for #manufacturing have emerged as a major barrier to achieving Europe’s cleantech ambitions. 
 
As the European Commission and European Investment Bank (EIB) prepare to launch a counter-guarantee instrument for manufacturers in the #Wind and #Grid sectors, our report makes an urgent call for these counter-guarantees to be widened to other strategic cleantech equipment, such as #electrolysers, long-duration energy storage systems (#LDES) and innovative renewables. 
 
When selling innovative equipment, cleantech manufacturers are asked for a series of bank guarantees. Because of their lower bankability compared to large industrials, banks ask for 100% cash collateral for the guarantees, tying precious capital that should go to building up their manufacturing capacity. Public counter-guarantees offer policymakers an efficient instrument to free up scarce private capital towards cleantech manufacturing. Guarantees have a relatively low loss rate: for every euro of public money spent, tens to hundreds of euros of working capital could be invested in cleantech manufacturing.
 
Our report makes the case for urgent action:

🏦  Setting up an EU-wide scheme managed by a leading institution such as the EIB. It would provide counter-guarantees for cleantech equipment, focus on the scaleup of cleantech manufacturing, cover at least 80% of the risk. The scheme could start by focusing on advance payment guarantees, the easiest and least risky of manufacturing guarantees

💲 An initial scheme should cover at least €5 billion of counter-guarantees (for instance: up to 200 million for 25 companies), and if successful expand to €20 billion in the coming years.
 
⏰ The time to act is now. A critical mass of cleantech scale-ups are reaching the industrialization stage and are receiving more and more requests for bank guarantees to sell their solutions. The next 2-3 years are a crucial juncture for achieving the EU’s 2030 climate and industry targets.

Never before has it been so crucial for the #cleantech #founders to understand what their funding path would look like when searching for and accepting an investment. Tip: it's not as typical as a "normal b2b saas" we've encountered in Estonia so far.

Thankfully, last week came to show all of that as the Cleantech Group's Cleantech Forum Europe finally took place in Estonia, bringing together the brightest of 'em all to dive deep into deep and cleantech.

It was an effort planned for 2 years, and luckily we had the City of Tallinn throwing a large NEXPO Tallinn to showcase what is being done in sustainability. A group effort, a synergy without which this sector can not fulfil the goals of climate neutrality. What a blast!

Cleantech innovators are aiming for the more challenging problems in climate change, getting younger, and coming from more diverse geographies, while seed investments are a higher percentage of overall venture investments now more than ever. 

In the third quarter of 2023, it has become clear that the spike in Asia-Pacific fundraising rounds is a 2023 headline. The UK has maintained the leading position for startups across Europe & Israel, with #carbon management as a central theme, while China overtakes India with startups in #advancedenergy materials and advanced manufacturing sectors. Besides the Energy & Materials nexus, Agriculture & Food experienced no drop-off in fundraising amounts from Q2 to Q3, where funding went to #precisionagriculture, crop inputs, and technologies for animal and aquaculture management.

Ammonia cracking, the dissociation of ammonia into hydrogen and nitrogen, broadens potential applications for ammonia as an energy carrier and fuel, including applications for energy, transportation and industrial processes.

The demand for alternative fuels and energy transportation has peaked the interest in ammonia cracking innovation, where venture money and corporate engagement is increasing. 💪 Cleantech for Iberia launches coalition to supercharge Iberian cleantech with investors representing funds of over €1 billion 💪

Europe faces a polycrisis with #energy at its centre. To tackle challenges such as war, inflation and supply chain disruption in an era of geopolitical turmoil, leading global economies are embroiled in a full-swing race to deploy cleantech innovation. While last financial quarter offered the narrowest-ever gap in EU-North America investment, we risk falling behind. To maintain our competitiveness, a strong Iberian cleantech economy is vital. 

Yesterday , at the WebSummit LLC, we presented our coalition. We have convened 18 innovators, investors and universities, all of them key players of the region’s cleantech ecosystem. 

Momentum behind the Iberian cleantech scene has grown rapidly over the past several years. According to our in-house investment data, in 2022, €676 million was invested in Iberian cleantech, a six-fold investment increase over the previous five years. 

With abundant sources of clean energy like wind and solar, a developing green hydrogen economy and a strong existing industrial base, Spain and Portugal possess many potential competitive advantages in frontier sectors such as green steel, green fertilisers and long-duration energy storage.

Our coalition will now accelerate the deployment of the most ambitious climate and industrial solutions, forging an ecosystem which brings capital, technology and policy working together to enable Iberian net-zero industrial leadership.

This launch marks the ignition of the cleantech movement in Iberia. The best is yet to come!
