With interests in 60 TV channels and 31 radio stations, RTL Group reaches audiences worldwide and owns stakes in TV channels and radio stations in Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Spain, Hungary, Croatia, and Southeast Asia. 

This means that having a strategic link to the complete list of the broadcaster’s footprint enables JOB TODAY to expand into additional markets, such as Germany and France, in the future. 

Outcomes:

The jobs marketplace’s $35mn gross media deal with Europe’s significant broadcasters is represented by RTL Ventures, German Media Pool VC, and Atresmedia. This multi-million funding round was built on an earlier investment in JOB TODAY by Atresmedia in Spain, as well as an investment by Channel 4 Ventures.

Between 2017 and 2018, post-media-for-equity round, the company registered a 122% growth in revenue and continued to grow at an average growth rate of 50% year on year. 

Since its launch in 2015, JOB TODAY has attracted two 900,000 employers, processed 9.5mn job applications, and expanded from two countries in 2017 to eight in 2022. 

A magnificent growth journey to have in just eight years of existence.

Media-for-Equity Unicorn Case Study. 🦄

Cazoo is an online used car marketplace designed to transform how people buy, finance, or rent used cars. Its platform lets users buy, finance, or rent a used car entirely online and have it delivered to their door within hours.

Objectives

Cazoo identified the opportunity to transform the used-car-buying experience, which suffers from poor satisfaction and convenience and is failing to meet the needs of consumers. Reinvent the used-car-buying experience by providing UK car buyers with the best selection, value, quality, and convenience.

Outcomes

A masterclass in blitz-scaling. Cazoo has gone from the idea stage at the seed round in December 2018 to launch in December 2019, to unicorn status in June 2020, to agree to a $7bn SPAC deal in March 2021.

Cazoo is now the fastest British business ever to have reached the rare and coveted unicorn status.

Cazoo has already sold thousands of cars, delivering them to customers across every region of the UK, generating over £20mn in revenues in its first three months. 

It has achieved this by pulling various levers:

Hiring a world-class team – the core tenet of any startup success story, Cazoo rapidly built out the team, with many of the Zoopla management team joining, as well as top talent from Made.com, Farmdrop, and MoneySuperMarket.

Heavy investment in inventory – 1,660 cars in inventory at launch, giving consumers a breadth of choice.

DMG Ventures has backed Cazoo with significant funding from the seed round to public listing, with over £100mn invested. This funding has fuelled Cazoo’s growth by enabling it to ramp up the team, acquire inventory at scale and advertise aggressively.

They have also worked closely with Cazoo to fully leverage their media assets, helping turn Cazoo into the highly recognizable brand it is today.

After a heavy weight and regular display campaign across Daily Mail Group’s papers, it was time to build on this and use content to boost consumer understanding and consideration of the Cazoo proposition.

Readers wanted quick-to-digest, helpful content about brands they could afford, so they launched new regular auto sections across DMG’s titles, enabling Cazoo to position themselves as credible, honest, and trusted motor experts.

Results after the first four months among readers who recall the campaign:

+86% increase in spontaneous awareness of Cazoo
+33% increase in readers who would consider using Cazoo
+17% awareness of consideration of conversion
