Philosopher Nick Bostrom describes inventions as stones humans pick out of an opaque Jar, white stones like antibiotics are a tremendous gift to humanity, gray stones on the other hand, for example nuclear technology, endows us with cheap energy but also the cost of nuclear weapons. In the jar however there also exist black stones, a grim reaper which when drawn eliminates humanity, and could explain the ‘fermi paradox’, a question posed by Enrico Fermi as to why do we seem to be alone in the universe.. What about #AI ? Is AI a white or a gray stone ? could it be the elusive black stone, to dig in we can go back to the roots of deep learning, which gained significant popularity in research in the 80’s, the same time movies like Blade Runner and Phlip K. Dick’s ‘Do androids dream of Electric Sheep’ were best sellers. The idea of dreams and consciousness seem intertwined in the canon of science fiction and with good reason. It is believed that almost all intelligent animals dream, even spiders exhibit REM behavior and the line between deep learning and intelligence is rapidly thinning. Perhaps we should think of Artificial Consciousness, not AI. Generative Adversarial Networks in particular that pit different deep learning models against one another, build particularly dream-like images and videos (linked). In all effect it appears we are touching the fabric of consciousness even if it is not an #AGI (Artificial general intelligence). Of all the facets of AI however, a particular concern is the lack of understanding on the engineering level of how Neural Networks actually behave. While we understand the concepts and how to train models, the actual trained model, particularly in complex #deeplearning models with large context windows is not well understood at all. When we build an Aircraft for example, every nut and bolt and wire is totally understood, with deep learning this is not the case, we are engineering powerful systems that outperform our expectations. The lack of understanding by humans, both engineers and users should be a cause for concern. It is also estimated that we are currently utilizing over 500 terawatt hours of energy on machine learning, over 10% of the entire US power grid, and it is increasing dramatically year over year. Humans are pumping massive energy into a nascent technology with no one at the helm, and no recourse if something goes awry. AI right now is the early internet, the Google moment has yet to come, an AI that is better by orders of magnitude and could be our deus ex machina moment. Is the world ready for that AGI ? Unfortunately probably not, we are not well positioned to handle such a power, and while AI, and AGI can be great for society it is undoubtedly not a white stone, unlike antibiotics, negative use cases exist. #Blockchain ecosystems today are very similar to #linux 20 years ago. Many different zealots defending their distributions, Debian users were similar to what we now call #bitcoin maximalists, only GNU pure code was acceptable, and tainting your kernel was blashphemous. If we look at history, debian did not take over the world, in fact companies like Google utilized the function of opensource and linux to crerate amazing products like android and cheap server farms. Blockchains should be thought about in terms of utility rather than religion, while bitcoin is a great money, #Ethereum and other L2's offer excellent smart contract and DeFi utility. Companies and users that can utilize the technology intelligently will win.

The Swiss Central bank and Norway are buying large quanities of #Bitcoin Stocks (Micro Strategy). Note they are not buying bitcoin directly (yet) but they are getting exposure without causing a firestorm. The #Microsoft #Azure issue sounds suspiciouslsy like a hack, third party update by #CrowdStrike would be a typical attack vector. Highly unlikely a security update would affect disk or brick the machine. We are not affected as we utilize custom linux installs on #googlecloud . However for those affected we would be very careful about data leaks, this could be the first part of a larger event.
