🌍 Combatting Deepfakes with Advanced eKYC Solutions
 
Insight Partners stated in their 2024 tech predictions: “The risks created by AI will only be combated with AI.” This is particularly true in the fight against deepfakes — a sophisticated form of digital fraud created by AI-driven algorithms.
 
Deepfakes have emerged as a major global security threat, bypassing facial recognition systems and leading to significant data breaches. To counter this, leveraging advanced AI technologies within a robust electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) process is crucial.
 
📈 Recent statistics highlight this urgency:
 
35% of US businesses experienced deepfake security incidents last year, with deepfakes ranking second in the nation’s leading cybersecurity threats.
Despite this, 71% of businesses in the US haven't taken steps to protect against deepfakes, and 46% lack any action plan.
 
The danger of deepfakes has been made apparent in very public cases already. In 2019, a deep-fake video was used to scam a CEO into wiring $243,000 to a bank account. Similarly, in 2021, a criminal gang used deepfakes to bypass eKYC authentication and access bank accounts containing millions of dollars. 
 
The rising threat of AI-powered fraud requires an AI-powered defence, starting with robust eKYC processes. These technologies are able to detect bad actors and presentation attacks quickly, with liveness detection analysing subtle facial expressions, skin texture and more, identifying even the most sophisticated deepfakes.

Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulation has arrived, but what does it mean for Crypto Asset Service Providers (CASPs) and crypto users?

This is the first wave of the new legislation, which will impact how stablecoins are issued. Further regulation, which will more directly impact CASPs, is anticipated to launch in December later this year.

MiCA has set a standardized rulebook across the EU, legitimizing crypto businesses against the tide of industry doubters. But what are the impacts on stablecoins?

🗒️ Definitions:
Asset Referenced Tokens - stablecoins that maintain a value against another asset, such as gold.
E-Money Tokens - stablecoins that maintain a value against a single fiat currency, including Tether.io and Circle's USDC.

💥 Impact on stablecoins:
🧮 To operate in the region, stablecoin issuers must comply with the new EU standards. This leaves the door open to potential exits in the EU market for existing players.

🛫 Crypto exchanges are already delisting certain stablecoins that do not meet their standards due to this new regulation.

💶 There is an expected shift towards Euro-backed stablecoins over the US Dollar.

🌆 These regulations should attract large institutions to the market now there is a more obvious regulatory structure to follow, driving industry competitiveness.

The next wave of crypto regulations in the EU is expected in December and is anticipated to relate more directly to CASPs than the MiCA stablecoin policies. 

MiCA demonstrates a renewed regulatory stance on the crypto industry and suggests that the EU remains ahead of its Western counterparts in America and the UK.
