Today’s Household Composition

As we approach Thanksgiving here in 2022, you may wonder why traveling spikes so much.  AAA’s annual forecast expects nearly 55M Americans will travel during the holiday weekend. Household composition is a relevant perspective to understand the phenomena. There are over 330M people and 167M unique households in the United States according to Confianza’s database of America.  About half of the households, 83M, are single person households while 35M are two people and 49M are three or more people.  It follows then with 70% of households with 2 or fewer people, many of them will travel to celebrate Thanksgiving. 
Many of the 167M households in the United States will celebrate Thanksgiving this year. Most of the two person households (35 million) will be traveling to visit family or friends. 49M households of 3 or more people typically remain home or host Thanksgiving feasts for family and friends. Approximately fifteen percent of the 83M single person households are also expected to travel. So it's no surprise AAA estimates over 50M people will travel 100 miles or more for the holiday weekend. Hopefully those that are not traveling will be with a local friend or neighbor. An interesting fact, single parent households have dropped ten percent from 22M in 2020 to 20M in 2022. Note: 167M represents the "unique" households eliminating vacation and other non-primary residences.
