VTOL Innovators in the News Congratulations to both Piasecki Aircraft and Alakai Technologies for being featured on recent covers of Vertical Flight Society's flagship "Vertiflite". We are pleased to be working with both companies and they pioneer innovative VTOL platforms, notably including designs using hydrogen fuel cell (H2FC) propulsion technology. The latest issue has details on the work of both companies in this area.

CDI Goes to the Ballpark - and Honors Longtime Employees CDI staff gathered on June 7 for our third annual spring outing at Mercer County Waterfront Park, home of the Trenton Thunder. It was great night for both weather and baseball - and best of all for employees and their families to gather and take a brief break from a busy year. While the event was enlivened by meetings with important local dignitaries (see pictures), the highlight of the evening was an informal awards ceremony recognizing the contributions of long-serving and hard-working employees; Pavel Danilov, Eddie Dollson, Melissa Kinney, Glen Whitehouse, and Michael Yu were honored for over eighty collective years of service to the company. Congratulations to them all as we continue to celebrate CDI's 45th year in business. Current CDI staff meeting with Boomer, while future staff wrap up a discussion with Cloudman.

General Parallellization Tookit for Scientific Software With SBIR funding from NASA, we have created a tool for creating parallel code, called ptool. Ptool works like a command line compiler and outputs source code for serial, MPI, OpenMP, CUDA, MPI+OpenMP, or MPI+CUDA. Ptool calls the compiler of your choice and compiles the particular parallel version of the code you have chosen to create. To use ptool, only a small set of modifications needs to be made to an existing code in order for ptool to create one (or all) of the desired parallel source versions. Only a single source code repository needs to be maintained, not one for each parallel paradigm. Ptool is built on top of the open source project OPS (Oxford Parallel library for Structured mesh solvers - see https://lnkd.in/eqpzegxu ) and supports application that use single, non-adaptive, three dimensional structured mesh codes. Fortran is currently supported and support for C/C++ and dynamic adaptive mesh refinement are planned. We are currently using ptool to parallelize the magnetohydrodynamic code, ENLIL, for modeling the evolution of the solar wind. Running the MPI version created using ptool version achieves roughly the same performance as the original version and the MPI+CUDA version using 8 Nvidia Tesla-V100 GPUs on node of the Pleiades computer at NASA Ames achieves a factor of roughly 5 in time-to-solution as compared to the original version of ENLIL run on 16 cores of an Intel Xeon Gold 6154. CDI Awarded DOD STTR Phase II Contract on Adaptive Aircraft Design CDI is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a Phase II Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) contract from the U.S. Army to develop a variable-fidelity optimization capability for morphing aircraft design and evaluation. This will be led by Dr. Abhinav Sharma, in conjunction with Prof. Joaquim Martins of the University of Michigan (UM). Adaptive aircraft have the potential for significantly expanded operational envelopes when compared to fixed configurations. The technology that will be developed will allow for fast and accurate design of adaptive aircraft and performance evaluation in practical scenarios. This effort will expand the portfolio of analysis and design support capabilities available at CDI and provide new capabilities for designers and performance analysts of a wide range of air vehicles, including conventional fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, and next-generation vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) and short take-off and landing (STOL) vehicles in both the civil and government sectors.
