Today marks the start of 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 - a critical moment to shed light on one of the most pressing health threats facing humanity: antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Fighting antibiotic 💊 resistance is essential because antibiotics have been the cornerstone of modern medicine. Without effective antibiotics, the latest medical advances are at risk. The stakes are high; the study published in The Lancet estimated that in 2019, 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟭.𝟮𝟳 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘀 were directly attributable to AMR, with nearly 𝟱 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘀 associated with it. If no action is taken, projections suggest that AMR could cause 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝟭𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘀 annually by 2050, surpassing cancer as a leading cause of death. Economically, the global impact could be staggering, with potential losses of 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 $𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗨𝗦𝗗 due to increased healthcare costs and reduced productivity. AMR is a global issue that affects everyone, everywhere. Resistant strains can spread rapidly across borders and the responsibility to combat this threat requires collective action, from healthcare professionals, pharmaceutical companies, policymakers & governments but also the agriculture & food industries. Certain pathogens 🦠 have emerged as particularly tough adversaries in the battle against AMR. Known collectively as the 𝗘𝗦𝗞𝗔𝗣𝗘𝗘 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘀 - 𝘌. 𝘧𝘢𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘶𝘮, 𝘚. 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘶𝘴, 𝘒. 𝘱𝘯𝘦𝘶𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢𝘦, 𝘈. 𝘣𝘢𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘪, 𝘗. 𝘢𝘦𝘳𝘶𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘢, Enterobacter spp, and 𝘌. 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘪 - these organisms are notorious for causing severe infections and exhibiting high levels of resistance to multiple antibiotics. They are a focal point for current research, highlighting the urgent need for new treatments and preventive measures. The need for rapid and accurate diagnostics is therefore crucial in order to identify the infectious agents and administer the right treatment at the right time. Delayed or incorrect diagnoses can lead to the misuse of antibiotics, further driving resistance. By investing in and prioritizing diagnostics, we can significantly reduce unnecessary antibiotic use and improve patient outcomes. Outstanding efforts are already underway to address AMR. Antibiotic stewardship programs are being adopted in hospitals and clinics to optimize prescribing practices. Global surveillance networks, such as those coordinated by the World Health Organization, are enhancing the monitoring of AMR patterns worldwide. As we mark this important week, we, at 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘀 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁, urge everyone to join the movement against AMR. But there’s hope. 🌍 The largest increases in AMR deaths will occur in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in regions with limited access to healthcare. 🦠 Carbapenem resistance among Gram-negative bacteria is rising faster than any other antibiotic class, with over 1 million deaths in 2021 linked to these infections. 🏥 The “better care” scenario could avert 92 million deaths globally between 2025 and 2050, emphasizing the critical need for improved healthcare access and infection control measures.
