🎉 Wrapping Up Cyber Awareness Month with Insight and Determination As Cyber Awareness Month comes to a close, it's a moment to reflect on some of our findings from recent penetration tests performed by the team at CyberOps. While we celebrate the progress so many have made, it's clear that the journey toward robust cybersecurity is ongoing. 🔍 Recent Key Observations From CyberOps Penetration Testing include: Legacy Systems – One of the frequent issues we encountered was the continued use of outdated or unsupported software versions like PHP and VMware ESX/ESXi, which can expose organisations to significant vulnerabilities. These systems often lack the latest security patches, which makes them prime targets for attackers. API Security Gaps – Misconfigured API endpoints were also a common theme. Some APIs were found to expose sensitive information due to improper authentication or misconfigured security headers. Outdated Cryptographic Protocols – Our team identified instances where legacy SSL and insecure authentication methods were still in place, opening up avenues for potential breaches and data exposure. Authentication Bypass and IAM Gaps: One of the critical vulnerabilities we've identified is the bypass of authentication mechanisms on both internal and external-facing APIs and web servers. Weak or misconfigured IAM systems expose endpoints to unauthorised access, enabling malicious actors to exploit sensitive data or manipulate key functions. Our tests discovered several APIs allowing access without proper authentication tokens, leaving personally identifiable information (PII) and even administrative functionalities exposed. This highlights a deeper issue: while many organisations focus on external threats, internal IAM misconfigurations can be just as damaging. Implementing robust identity and access controls is not just about securing external-facing systems but ensuring that internal APIs are equally protected. 🚀 What’s Next: At CyberOps, we believe this is just the beginning. There’s still more work to be done, from upgrading outdated systems to implementing stricter API security measures and addressing the risks posed by legacy cryptography. The evolving landscape continues to test the resilience of organisations across industries, emphasising the critical role of proactive cybersecurity operations. Key Lessons from 2023–2024 Cyber Incidents 1/Supply Chain and Ransomware Attacks Surge Supply chain attacks remained a major threat, highlighted by the 3CX and MOVEit breaches in 2023. Both attacks show how vulnerabilities in third-party software can ripple through customer networks, causing widespread data breaches and operational disruptions. MOVEit alone impacted over 2,600 organisations and millions of individuals globally, including government agencies and financial institutions. 2/ Increased Exploitation of Zero-Day Vulnerabilities Recent incidents, such as the HTTP/2 protocol DDoS attack, underscore the need for organisations to patch vulnerabilities promptly. These zero-day attacks can have large impacts, as seen with the unprecedented DDoS peak of 398 million requests per second in 2023. 3/ Social Engineering and Credential Compromises The MGM Resorts breach in 2023 demonstrates that even large enterprises are susceptible to simple yet effective phishing and vishing techniques. This attack highlights the importance of employee training and robust multi-factor authentication (MFA) mechanisms to mitigate risks from human factors. 4/ Regulatory Scrutiny and Data Breach Notifications In Australia, data breaches reported to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) show an upward trend, with personal information leaks and ransomware continuing to dominate. Timely reporting and transparency are now essential to maintaining public trust and meeting regulatory requirements. With the increasing frequency and sophistication of cyber threats, proactive defence strategies are more important than ever. From healthcare to finance, small to large, these incidents serve as stark reminders that even the most robust defenses can be compromised. In response to this pressing challenge, experts in the field emphasise that cybersecurity is not a one-time effort but a continuous process that demands the involvement of the entire community. “Cybersecurity needs to be a team effort,” states Derek Grocke, director of CyberOps, based in Lot Fourteen Adelaide.
