Many hoped that solar, wind and other renewable sources would be sufficient to power a net-zero future. But we were mistaken. Today, with AI data centers devouring huge amounts of energy while the impact of climate change is more evident than ever, existing nuclear plants represent a carbon-free and reliable form of energy that we cannot ignore. Last year, the United Nations COP 28 report formally recognized the key role that nuclear energy plays in the fight against climate change. Rather than shutting down old nuclear plants, we must now make them more safe, efficient and cost effective to last for decades in the future. It is within this context that the UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) created the first ever Innovation Award to improve existing nuclear plants. 39 candidates from 9 countries competed for four awards. On September 17th, the IAEA declared Cypress Envirosystems and Southern Company a winner. Hank Strahley, Operations Support Supervisor from Southern Company, and Harry Sim , CEO of Cypress Envirosystems, received the award at the UN Headquarters in Vienna. The IAEA recognized the proven benefits resulting from the deployment of 300 Wireless Gauge Readers at Plant Hatch, leveraging IoT, Machine Vision and AI technologies. Interesting article - winning? Low cost and reliability suffer when only one form of generation is pushed by policy. A clean energy transition must serve society. Most grids operate best from a reliability perspective and cost perspective when resources are balanced to meet the needs of the area using the resources avaialble. A diverse portfolio managed around the best fit for low cost and reliability. From the article - ""The usual way of measuring the cost of solar simply ignores its unreliability and tells us the price when the sun is shining. The same is true for wind energy. That does indeed make them slightly cheaper than other electricity sources: 3.6 US¢ per kWh for solar, just ahead of natural gas at 3.8 US¢, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration . But if you account for reliability, their real costs explode: in 2022, one peer-reviewed study showed an increase of 11-42 times, making solar by far the most expensive electricity source, followed by wind. The enormous additional cost is for storage. We need electricity whether or not the sun is shining or the wind blowing. But our battery capacity is woefully inadequate. Research shows that every winter, when solar is contributing very little, Germany has a “wind drought” of five days on average when wind turbines also deliver almost nothing. That suggests batteries will be needed for a minimum of 120 hours — although the actual need will be much longer, since droughts sometimes last much longer and recur before storage can be filled. A new study shows that to achieve 100 per cent solar or wind electricity with sufficient backup, the U.S. would need to be able to store almost three months’ worth of electricity every year. It currently has seven minutes of battery storage. The required batteries would cost the U.S. five times its current GDP. And it would have to replace them all when they expired after just 15 years. Globally, the cost just to have sufficient batteries would run to 10 times global GDP, with a new bill every 15 years.""

Pneumatic thermostats were invented by Warren Johnson (of Johnson Controls) in 1895. It was a brilliant innovation that provided automatic feedback temperature control decades before electricity, electronics or computers were introduced. Little would Warren Johnson have guessed that over 130 years later in 2024, his technology is still in use in over half of all non-residential buildings - including hospitals, schools, office buildings, universities etc. However, compared with modern digital buildings, pneumatic buildings use 20-30% more energy, incur more occupant complaints, and require more maintenance labor. Upgrading them to digital controls has proven challenging - very costly, requiring opening up walls and ceilings, with significant occupant disruption. The Wireless Pneumatic Thermostat now solves this problem - a solution which installs in less than 10 minutes to deliver DIGITAL PNEUMATICS with minimal cost and disruption. Once in use, the energy savings, comfort and maintenance metrics are similar to modern digital buildings. Very interesting and relevant facts to show the impact of Germany's decision. It may serve as a valuable experience for California to consider. California may or may not be in the same situation at Germany was, but it will be wise to be completely transparent regarding the likely impact of terminating nuclear power on their economy. We all need to make pragmatic decisions with informed trade-offs.
