Dr. Jokichi Takamine, the first president of Daiichi Sankyo predecessor company, Sankyo Co., Ltd., has been named as one of the six 2024 Historical Inductees in the National Inventors Hall of Fame in the United States.
 
Born in Japan in 1854, Dr. Takamine, was a visionary scientist, who counts the first successful crystallization of adrenaline among his many achievements. 

He was also a passionate inventor, turning a revolutionary process for brewing whisky with malted rice into the basis for developing the digestive enzyme product, Taka-Diastase, which became popular worldwide. #DrJokichiTakamine #DShistory

Daiichi Sankyo has been selected for the fourth year in row to CDP’s A List of companies for transparency and performance leadership in our corporate sustainability efforts to fight climate change.
 
CDP is a “not-for-profit charity that runs the global disclosure system for investors, companies, cities, states and regions to manage their environmental impacts,” and the CDP’s A List is comprised of more than 330 companies worldwide that are “leading the way in environmental transparency and performance on climate change, deforestation and water security.”
 
According to CDP, it holds the largest environmental database in the world and every year scores around 15,000 companies on their “climate change, forests and water security disclosures.”

After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 at the age of 34, Eva Schumacher-Wulf created a magazine called “Mamma Mia!” to provide women with breast cancer information to talk about scientific advances in an easy-to-understand way, enabling cancer patients to know and exercise their own options. This print and online platform now has a quarterly circulation of 20,000.
 
Eva openly and publicly advocates for patients' rights and interests despite having been diagnosed with breast cancer, experiencing and surviving countless treatments, coping with the ups and downs of good news and bad news, and raising two children.

What do you usually do with the plastic packaging that your medicines come in? Did you know that “PTP” (press-through-package) packaging in which tablet medicines are wrapped can be recycled?
 
Daiichi Sankyo’s over-the-counter medicine company, Daiichi Sankyo Healthcare, together with the Japan affiliate of TerraCycle and with the cooperation of the City of Yokohama initiated the first Medicine Sheet Recycling Program in Japan that involved consumer participation.
 
For one year, from October 2022 to September 2023, special collection boxes were installed at pharmacies, drug stores, hospitals, and other public facilities, such as ward offices, in certain areas of Yokohama with the intention of separating collected medicine sheets into plastic and aluminum, and then turning them into recycled products.
 
The program’s original goal was to have 30 collection sites and collect 100,000 pieces, but due to an enthusiastic response from the citizens of Yokohama, with more than half saying (in a post-program survey) that they had participated, the number of sites was eventually increased to 60 and the amount collected reached the equivalent of 1.08 million pieces (1,077 kg), which was approximately double the revised target!
 
Daiichi Sankyo Healthcare received many positive comments from the pharmacies and facilities that served as collection sites, and some of them even called or wrote us to share their satisfaction with the program. 
 
The next goal is a full-scale rollout of the program in Yokohama, and we hope to expand the collection sites across their city to approximately 100 by March 2024. We also want to consider expanding the program nationwide.
 
Since medicine sheets are difficult to separate because the type and composition of plastic materials differ for each drug, consuming extra energy to recycle them, we also aim to develop an efficient recycling method by the end of 2024 and will be looking in more detail into the kinds of products which can be made from recycled plastic.
 
As part of our Sustainability commitment to contribute to the local community as a good corporate citizen, Daiichi Sankyo will continue to promote the full-scale rollout of the Medicine Sheet Recycling Program to spread awareness of medicine sheet recycling and establish a sustainable system in which to do it.

Daiichi Sankyo’s Global Head of Oncology Clinical Development, Mark Rutstein, always knew he wanted to help people.
 
Inspired during his undergraduate studies by his sister, who was training in surgical oncology, Mark searched out volunteer work at hospitals, which in turn drew him from pre-law to the field of medicine.
 
Following medical school and a residency where he gained extensive experience treating patients with cancer, Mark’s interest shifted again, and he decided to attend business school while also continuing his work as a doctor.
 
The understanding of business and healthcare he gained during his studies led him to his first position in the pharmaceutical industry, and eventually years later, to overseeing global clinical development of oncology at Daiichi Sankyo. #daiichisankyo  #science&technology #DSOBU
