South Africa's power crisis is getting worse as Eskom proposes level 16 load shedding, which could mean up to 23 hours of darkness.

But, solar energy is rapidly gaining momentum as a commercially viable and sustainable solution for power generation thanks to its advantages as an energy source and new policy changes.

1. South Africa receives an abundance of sunlight year-round. Its solar resource is among the highest in the world and is 120% more than in Europe and the UK. 

2. The country could also generate up to 500 GW of power from the sun, making solar a viable and attractive solution to the energy crisis. 

3. The government has created two new initiatives to incentivize the adoption of solar energy: 

- Individuals who install rooftop solar are eligible for a 25% rebate on the panel's cost.
- Businesses can reduce their taxable income by 125% of the investment they make in renewables.

More and more South Africans will turn to solar energy as a reliable and cost-effective alternative source of power. ⚡️

Commercial & Industrial (C&I) solar is taking off in South Africa. 

In 2021, NERSA, the energy regulator, relaxed licensing requirements for distributed energy projects. Now businesses that want to install solar systems that generate less than 100MW only need to register.

According to ESI Power, last year, NERSA registrations increased by a whopping 556% across all technologies. 

“Potential off-takers for self-generation or procurement of energy have now expanded from being very focused on the mining sector to almost the entire corporate sector - from retailers to the telecoms companies to agro and food processing to digital infrastructure to manufacturing to hospitality.”

We have two core offerings: PaaS and SaaS. 

PaaS (Power as a Service) - We provide clients with continuous power through long-term contracts. Clients pay a monthly fee for power consumption with zero upfront costs. We use a combination of technologies, including solar power and battery storage, which can be integrated into a client’s existing power setup, such as diesel and gas generators or grid. The PaaS service is popular with clients in the banking, retail, agricultural, and logistics sectors and clients with multiple locations. 

SaaS (Solar as a Service) - We supply clean and reliable solar to our clients. SaaS clients pay a tariff per kilowatt/hour for electricity consumed but pay zero upfront costs. Our solar system is significantly cheaper than conventional power systems used by our clients. The SaaS service is popular with large industrial clients.

We work with leading blue chip companies including Nigerian Bottling Company, Seven-Up Bottling Company, Nestle, Vivo Energy, UAC Foods, Standard Bank, Ecobank, among others.

Since 2020, we have proudly served Nigerian Bottling Company, makers of Coca-Cola, providing clean electricity at their factories across Nigeria. 

Our first solar installation for NBC was a 750kWp system for their Maiduguri factory in Nigeria’s northeast. We started work right when Covid broke out in March 2020. 

Victor Ezenwoko, our Nigeria country director, recalls that it was a trying moment, given the uncertainty around the pandemic. Yet the team succeeded in installing the system in under two months — a fact that  the team is very proud of.

Since that first site, we’ve installed more than 10MW of solar energy for eight NBC factories. Over the next two years, we look to triple that number.

According to @ESIAfrica, the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) will start exporting electricity to Togo, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, and Burkina Faso. 

With rising revenues, GRIDCo will be able to invest in upgrading its transmission infrastructure to ensure a reliable and stable supply of electricity.

This is great news for Ghana’s energy sector!

It’s time for some solar myth-busting.

Today we are looking at the myth that small solar installations cannot have any impact on carbon emissions.

On average, a 10 kW solar roof can eliminate around 4 tons of carbon emissions annually, equivalent to planting over 100 trees per year. Larger installations can have 10x the effect. 

Solar panels have a lifespan of 30-35 years and don't require much maintenance compared to traditional energy solutions, reducing waste. 

With a solar rooftop system, you can reduce your carbon footprint by 80% in just one year. That means each solar roof owner can play a role in helping to slow down climate change.

One of our flagship projects in 2022 was our 950kWp solar system for Atlantic Shrimpers Ltd (ASL). Located in Badagry, two hours from Lagos, ASL is the largest shrimp farm in West Africa. 

We installed a 950kWp solar system, our largest ground-mounted installation to date.

This year, we look to expand the system to 5MW and add 3.9MW/h battery storage. ✨

It’s time to debunk another solar myth. ⚡

It is commonly believed that solar panels are made of toxic materials, making solar energy bad for the environment. 

Yet contrary to belief,  the vast majority of solar panel materials (96%) are derived from earth-friendly substances like glass, aluminum, copper, and silicon. 

What about the remaining 4%? Lead is still largely used in soldering solar panels. This is the process of putting individual solar cells together to produce solar modules.

By 2026, solar panel manufacturers aim to slash lead-based solder to less than 50% of solar PV and reduce lead use to less than 20% in cell manufacturing. 

There is still room to improve the sustainability of the solar industry, but it is largely environment friendly.
