Gas fermentation - the new frontier 🚀

Innovative companies are showing a renewed interest in the potential of fermentation to tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges. At the forefront of this movement is a groundbreaking new approach with the power to transform how we produce food forever: gas fermentation.

Positive news from the sustainable protein industry! European governments have directed almost €500 million towards developing more sustainable proteins.

A new report by The Good Food Institute has found that €477m has been provided to projects and companies working to develop more sustainable foods, such as plant-based and cultivated meat. The bulk of this amount (€370m) was invested by European governments last year alone.

With food production currently accounting for a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions, this is a positive sign that decision-makers are recognising and acting on the potential of #alternativeproteins to transform our food system.

A new report from the World Resources Institute shows that, despite pledges made at COP26, #deforestation intensified in 2022, with an area of tropical forest the size of Switzerland lost to deforestation.

This surge in deforestation suggests the 2021 Glasgow Leaders’ Declaration on Forests, which commits to working collectively to "halt and reverse forest loss and land degradation by 2030", is off track.

However, the report also found that this trend is reversible. Positive developments in countries like Indonesia, which has reduced its primary tropical forest loss more than any other country in recent years, show that reversing deforestation is possible. 

We are doing our part to reverse the trend by developing our product Proton™.

Unlike other plant-based protein sources, the #gasfermentation process on which our core technology is based doesn’t require arable land. We calculate that producing 100,000 tonnes of our product Proton™ will prevent the requirement for a soy plantation three times the size of Paris.

Catching up on developments in the lab 🧑🔬

Most of our international team is split between Brightlands Chemelot Campus in the Netherlands and the University of Nottingham in the UK. While spread apart geographically, we always meet and connect in person when the opportunity arises.

Our Vice President of Commercial and Sales John Hays, was recently in Nottingham for some face-to-face meetings. While there, he seized the chance to visit our lab-based team to check in on their pioneering work enhancing our #gasfermentation technology.

Our UK lab team are currently working in many areas, including strain development and the technical scaling of our platform #technology and its growing applications.

El Niño is officially here. So what does this mean for our planet?

The NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration recently confirmed the onset of El Niño, a weather phenomenon involving the warming of the surface of the equatorial eastern Pacific Ocean that occurs every two to seven years. The implications of this weather event are extensive.

With El Niño here to stay for up to a year, solutions to curb the impact of this weather event are more urgent than ever. 

We’re doing our part to protect against the potential disruption to food supplies by developing Proton™. Our #gasfermentation process is entirely self-contained and independent from weather events. This means we can guarantee continuous production, regardless of location, weather or climate.

What does #carboncapture have to do with protein?

At Deep Branch we’re committed to using clean ingredients to produce climate-friendly food. To achieve this, we only use food-grade CO₂ to produce our protein, and we position ourselves squarely within the value chains of carbon capture, utilisation (CCUS) technologies. 

But what exactly is CCU?

#CCU is the process by which CO₂ is captured and recycled for further usage. This prevents the release of excess carbon into the atmosphere and repurposes it instead, as a valuable by-product to produce other goods.

How do we source our carbon?

With CCU, we’re moving carbon through our economy without pulling it out of the ground. You can view our technology as the U in a CCU value chain - utilising the purified carbon dioxide to produce high-quality products. We feed this clean carbon (together with hydrogen and simple micronutrients) into our (R)evolve gas fermentation platform, where microbes turn into our single cell #protein product Proton™.

By turning CO₂ into a climate-friendly protein, we help contribute to a more sustainable #animalfeed industry.

New research from Ipsos suggests Europeans are highly motivated to buy sustainable food to reduce their climate impact, with 76% of people saying they would like to know the #carbonfootprint of the food they buy.

How do we solve this? Carbon footprint labelling is an easy way of helping consumers make more sustainable choices.

We strongly support giving customers more information about where their #food comes from. The production process for our single-cell protein Proton™ is completely transparent and traceable, meaning its carbon footprint can be measured accurately. We’ve calculated that Proton can reduce the footprint of #animalfeed by 60% compared to conventional proteins.
