I had the opportunity to sit down with Chris Reichhelm for his Lab to Market Leadership podcast the other day. We discussed some of the key challenges to transitioning a technology from academia into a startup, and we focused on three of the most important lessons: 1) listening to customers and understanding the problem you are solving for them is much more important than technology or business ideas; 2) to make the most of really smart technical talent, your organization needs to value management as a skill, particularly at the middle management level; and 3) startup companies should be focusing on tangible problems that customers are grappling with right now rather than trying to go after huge, but nebulous, problems. Some episodes feel like they’ve been building for awhile. This was one of those. This week I was joined by Chris Perkins , an American entrepreneur with 2 Deep Tech exits under his belt – one in biofuels / energy and the other in medical diagnostics. Our ‘starter course’ was around the critical shift in mindset that’s required for academic- or research-focused founders when they join a start-up. Chris highlighted 3 parts of this. 1. Getting comfortable not having all the answers – a big challenge, especially for the academically successful. 2. How the key to success lies less with your research and more with your ability to solve your customer’s problems. At DropWorks, Chris’ medical start-up, 90% of what they thought their platform should be was eventually stripped away when they eventually figured out what customers wanted. 3. Appreciating that ‘good enough’ is often better than ‘perfect’. Start-up leadership is very different from academic research. Founders therefore need to be clear with themselves and others around where they can add the most value and how they want to be spending their time. But our ‘main course’ was around what Chris feels is the most undervalued skill in Deep Tech start-ups – management. We overvalue technical invention and technical brilliance, and we undervalue the importance of management – the art/science of getting complex things done. I couldn’t agree more. If we want to have a thriving Deep Tech industry in this country, we need thriving Deep Tech companies – those that generate lots of revenue and make a profit. The key to realising this may not lie so much in technical brilliance, but in better management, which is a separate skill. There is a lot of food for thought in this episode. Enjoy.

Giant Ventures leads their largest early-stage investment, co-leading Beyond Aero ’s Series A with Bpifrance to make zero-emissions flight a reality. Led by CEO Eloa Guillotin , Beyond Aero has already secured $1 billion in demand for 108 hydrogen-electric aircraft and achieved France’s first manned hydrogen-electric flight.
