Today marked the launch of the fourth edition of The Global E-waste Monitor, the most up-to-date overview of global e-waste data, policy, and regulation.

The report revealed that:
📈 The world’s generation of e-waste is rising 5 times faster than documented e-waste recycling

🖥️ A record 62 million tonnes of e-waste was produced in 2022, up 82% from 2010 and on track to rise another 32% to 82 million tonnes in 2030

♻️ Less than 25% of the year’s e-waste mass was documented as having been properly collected and recycled in 2022, leaving $62 billion worth of recoverable natural resources unaccounted

💰 If countries could bring the e-waste collection and recycling rates to 60% by 2030, the benefits would exceed costs by more than $38 billion
As the report highlights, recycling of e-waste is an urgent problem that needs to be fixed, but it also needs to be done in a sustainable, affordable manner.

Slow progress tackling UK 'e-waste tsunami' – MPs” – BBC News has published an article drawing comment from the #governments Environmental Audit Committee around the ‘disappointing’ implementation Government of recommendations made to encourage the correct disposal of e-waste. 
 
Not only does this mean toxic chemicals are leaking into the surrounding environment, but valuable metals needed for new technology as well as the #EnergyTransition, such as #gold, #nickel and #copper, are being discarded in landfill sites.
 
Chairman Philip Dunne commented: ‘It appears the government is yet to grasp fully the scale of the e-waste tsunami’.

Last week DEScycle CTO Dr Rob Harris presented at the UK-US Critical Minerals R&D Workshop in Chicago. 

The event focused on increasing collaborative R&D efforts into technologies that can enable the domestic production of #criticalminerals

Rob presented how DEScycle not only enables domestic production but how its technology enables #sustainable and #circular supply chains

Did you know e-waste is the world’s fastest growing waste stream and will exceed US$82bn annually by 2030? DEScycle is transforming metal recovery and recycling methods using eco-friendly Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES). 

🧪DES are non-toxic, non-water-based salts that allow for low-temperature, low-energy operations; resulting in low-carbon, low-impact metals.  DEScycle’s processes produce 98.2% less carbon emissions than conventional methods as well as being more cost effective and resulting in a much higher metal recovery.

In 2019 an estimated 53.6 million tonnes of e-waste were produced globally, with only 17.4% recycled.

Around 60 million tonnes of e-waste are currently produced globally each year 💻 🗑
 
That’s more than the weight of the Great Wall of China.
 
E-waste is projected to grow to 75 million tonnes annually, unless we find a way to recycle valuable metals, plastics and rare-earth elements back into the economy for reuse ♻

Right now, only 20% of this is re-used – which is where companies like DEScycle come in. 

We partnered with DEScycle to transform metal recycling using Deep Eutectic Solvent (DES). The solvent is a mixture of salts that leaves non-metals untouched whilst dissolving more than 99% of the gold, nickel, copper and many other high-demand metals for recovery from e‑waste such as phones, tablets and laptops.

This process has a much lower carbon footprint and environmental impact than long-standing metal processing methods that involve smelting and the use of toxic chemicals like cyanide ☠
