From the early days of jazz and blues to hip-hop and electronic music, explore the legacies of these Black-owned record labels. 

On February 19, 1878, the patent for the phonograph was awarded to Thomas Edison and this invention went on to create an audio revolution that continues to this day.

For the first test of the machine, Edison recited “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” Upon playback, he was astonished to hear the nursery rhyme played back to him. Although there are no copies for sale, the self-released version of Edison’s “Mary Had A Little Lamb” on wax cylinder is logged in the Discogs Database, and in over 100 Wantlists.
