🚀 Being great at your job isn't enough to be a Community Manager at Draper Startup House! 🚀

Picture this: It’s a typical Tuesday, and my boss Nivin Joseph 😈 drops a challenge in my lap—a task so far out of my comfort zone that it could’ve been on another planet! 😅

I got a WhatsApp message that threw me right into the deep end: "Convince 3 or more guests and a DSH staff member to go on a field trip to Bangalore Palace... and you have 5 hours!" 🤯

Mind you, this wasn’t something I could just knock out on my laptop or delegate like usual. Oh no, this was next-level stuff! 😂

So, what do you do when you're tasked with convincing entrepreneurs to take a midweek field trip? 🤔 You buckle up and channel your inner salesperson, that’s what! Spoiler alert: convincing entrepreneurs on a Tuesday is not for the faint of heart!

But guess what? We ended up convincing 6 amazing guests and a DSH staff member to join the adventure 🚐 And what started as just another task turned into one of the most fun experiences I’ve had at work! 🎉

Moral of the story? Community managers wear a lot of hats, and sometimes those hats come with serious sales skills! 🧢

Digitizing adventure tourism 🏞️🌐
The focus of Outtripis to support the adventure tourism sector which makes up 40% of global tourism, and is approaching 50% of the industry. This market is barely digitized, leaving providers without the tools they need to enhance the user experience and support the entire supply chain. 

Bringing technology to a fragmented industry 💻🏔️
Their mission isn't just about optimizing distribution channels to reach more end-users or expanding the audience for these businesses. It's about providing the technology and infrastructure to an industry that is highly fragmented but consistently growing, especially post-pandemic. While many in the industry use technology, they lack real-time insights into availability. 

Turning the pandemic into a strategic advantage 🌍💼
Instead of letting the pandemic hold them back, they saw it as a golden opportunity. With time in their hands, they started digitalizing rental shops for adventure tourism equipment, like ski gear, mountain bikes, and kayaks. Normally, these providers would be too busy during peak season to give us the time of day. But in 2020, they had the perfect scenario to gather valuable information and create the technology we needed. This allowed them to launch with a strong base of providers and expand from Argentina to Chile within a year.

A shared vision and passion 🤝☕️
Liliana Barck and Gonzalo Rico met through mutual friends. After grabbing a coffee, they started an in-depth conversation about their values, vision, and what entrepreneurship meant to each of them. They agreed that ideas need to be executed to understand their market potential, and that's how Outtrip was born.

A seamless onboarding process 🌍🚀
Their onboarding process is smooth and frictionless, allowing us to quickly onboard suppliers who were already familiar with us. Their go-to-market strategy involves partnerships with adventure tourism associations, like their recent agreement with #ATMEX in Mexico, which connects them directly with service providers across Latin America.

The challenges of fundraising💰🚀
Outrip has raised $465,000 across three different phases. They've been backed by Amazon Web Services (AWS) through their Latino Founders program and participated in Start-Up Chile. Each round has been a learning experience. They're now raising a $1 million round, which brings new challenges and opportunities as they engage with investors from Latin America, the U.S., and Europe.

Last week at Draper Startup House Bangalore, we had some seriously awesome VCs drop by:

Our resident entrepreneurs got to pitch their hearts out, and the feedback they received was pure gold. The energy was unreal!

But it wasn’t just about funding. What made this week extra special were the amazing backstories these VCs shared—from an Airforce veteran turned VC, to a DJ turned VC, to a super young college grad already making waves in the venture world. These stories were pure inspiration, especially for anyone thinking about starting their journey in VC.

We also hosted two panel events with these incredible VCs, attracting nearly 200+ attendees! It was a blast and a huge success for our community.

From Intern to Full-Time at Draper Startup House 🐢🐇🚀: 
A Journey Fueled by Determination and a Father’s Wisdom

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve officially transitioned from an intern to a full-time role at Draper Startup House. This journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, and I owe it all to the lessons my father, my guiding light, has instilled in me.

The Beginning
Fresh out of engineering, I walked into Draper Startup House with a bold question: “Do you have a job for me?” What followed was a 12-hour interview session that tested every ounce of my resilience. They didn’t have an opening, but they created one—because of my big mouth! And guess what? I’m so glad I cried for the right reasons. During the stress test, who would have thought that community-building could be this challenging?

Lessons Learned
Never Fear to Ask: Asking led to an opportunity I didn’t even know existed. If you want something, go for it, even if it means walking into the unknown.

Be Yourself: Never try to be someone else or compare yourself with others. It’s your uniqueness that sets you apart.

Minimum Input, Maximum Output: Moving from an internship to a full-time role, I’ve embraced the principle my father taught me—put in what’s necessary and deliver beyond expectations. Partnering with peers and mastering the art of collaboration has made all the difference.

This journey wouldn’t have been possible without the endless teachings and support from my father. He’s always pushed me to strive for excellence and to be fearless in my pursuits. Consider this my (very late) Father’s Day tribute to you, Appa. Thank you for everything.

Here’s to new beginnings and the exciting road ahead at Draper Startup House.

P.S. Even the practical skills my father taught me, like how to parallel park, have come in handy. Parking at Draper’s is an ongoing challenge, and I’m thankful for all those practice sessions with Appa.

Vaishvi Bansal and her friends ran a Shark Tank style competition in college. From conceptualisation to execution, it was a three-month long rigorous learning that led to a total of eight startups raising around 25 Lacs! That was her first taste of what it takes to raise funds and "once you taste the blood, it's difficult to not go back to it", she quips.
