Why did you decide to join EarnIn?
I knew my career would never be one where money was the most important part; it must also be mission-driven to fulfill my God-given purpose. When I started my interview process at EarnIn, I knew something was different — people were smart, authentic, customer-centric, and mission-oriented, and the mission was much needed. Five years later, my time at EarnIn has helped me dial up my nuance, empathy, understanding, and connection.

What does the Lunar New Year mean to you? 
Family reunion and new beginnings, with blessings of prosperity, health, and happiness. 

What’s a Lunar New Year tradition that has a special meaning for you and your family? We eat rice balls called “tang yuan” to symbolize togetherness, warmth, and completeness to start the new year. They’re delicious and can be sweet or savory. Common sweet fillings have sesame, red bean, or peanut paste, and savory fillings have salted radish with ground pork, dried shrimp, and dried mushrooms. 

How can AAPI allies help support Lunar New Year celebrations?
Celebrate it with us and take part in the red envelopes! It’s a real New Year’s celebration even if it’s not based on the Gregorian calendar. Respect it and treat it as you would New Year’s Eve, as a time for us to celebrate and spend time with our families.

Black history demands year-round attention. Case in point: EarnIn’s Black employee community and our Deputy General Counsel, Simone dos Santos.

Because when history is being made with new financial tools like same-day pay, Black history is being made too. Here’s what Simone had to say… 

What does Black History Month mean to you? 
I believe that Black history is American history and should be recognized all year long, which is what I strive to do and encourage others to do. So for me, this month is more about honoring the contributions of Blacks in the US, as opposed to a month of knowledge sharing, which should happen year-round.

Can you share a figure in Black history who has personally impacted you?  
I often reflect on the story of Frederick Douglass. He was born into slavery, escaped to freedom, and became one of the greatest orators and activists of the 19th century. Ultimately, he composed one of the greatest speeches, What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July? That speech resonates with me and others even today. Frederick Douglass demonstrates to me the power of Black people and the strength of our ancestors. He is an example of our ability to not only overcome the most adverse conditions but to thrive despite man-made obstacles.

To you, how can individuals effectively support Black civil rights and social justice? 
I think by undertaking little acts every day as allies. That means calling out injustice when you see it, speaking with friends who may say or do things that are contrary to the ideals of social justice, and taking opportunities to listen and learn.

Why did you decide to work for EarnIn? 
Having worked on fair lending and Community Reinvestment Act issues for a good part of my career, I’ve always had a passion for working on issues and on teams that are focused on making financial services accessible to everyone. Despite being a for-profit enterprise, EarnIn is truly mission-driven, working to level the playing field between the haves and the hard-working people who represent the backbone of the economy so everyone has opportunities to enjoy life on their own terms, without costly fees, and to handle the hiccups that happen in life, with grace and dignity. The complexity of the work is also rewarding, as is the opportunity to collaborate in a truly global organization.

As 2024 kicks into gear, keeping the lessons of the holidays going a little longer can do wonders.

So we chatted with Wenjuan (Jane) Wang, EarnIn’s Financial Planning & Analysis Director, about what hers looked like…

How did you celebrate the arrival of the new year? 
Making dumplings together with my family. In Chinese culture, dumplings signify prosperity and good luck. By doing everything on our own, from making fillings and wrappers to putting them into shapes and cooking them into a delicacy, we enjoy wrapping our very best wishes into dumplings.

Are there any books or podcasts inspiring you in the new year?
I read a book over the holiday called The Psychology of Money. Even though I don’t agree with every point in the book, it does shed light on personal finances and provides life wisdom I find quite enlightening. Filled with stories with perspectives from different angles, from people of different financial statuses, it helped me relate more to our customers and spark new inspirations for my work here at EarnIn.  

What advice or quote would you share as a guiding light entering the new year?
“Nothing is as good or as bad as it looks.” Stay true to yourself and keep going; your faith and hard work will eventually pay dividends.   

What’s your favorite thing about working at EarnIn?
I like how transparent the company is to its employees and to its customers. EarnIn puts trust in the people who work here and aims to build trust with its customers wholeheartedly. That culture of trust and empowerment is unparalleled.
