We are delighted to announce that Rolls-Royce has begun work on a new set of ground-breaking tests as part of our collaborative hydrogen research programme.

Rolls-Royce has identified three technology challenges in the journey to enabling hydrogen for use in aviation: fuel combustion, fuel delivery and fuel systems integration with an engine - all elements which must be rigorously tested to ensure operational safety.

The latest set of tests, which commenced this week at Rolls-Royce’s facility at Solihull in the UK, will look to prove aerospace cryogenic liquid hydrogen pump systems. These will address a key engineering challenge of taking low-pressure liquid hydrogen, chilled below -250°C, and pressurising it so that it can then be pumped into an engine to be combusted.

This latest update follows another world first in September when tests on a full annular combustor of a Pearl 700 engine at DLR in Cologne running on 100% hydrogen proved the fuel can be combusted at conditions that represent maximum take-off thrust. And in 2022, easyJet and Rolls-Royce also set a world first by successfully running a modern aero engine, an AE2100, on 100% green hydrogen at Boscombe Down, UK.

There is lots of work to be done but we are extremely encouraged by the progress Rolls-Royce continues to make and look forward to seeing our hydrogen testing programme go from strength to strength.

We were proud this week to organise a donation drop for Noah Enterprise, a local charity organisation which supports homeless people around Luton and Bedfordshire. Our brilliant Commercial team collected essential food and drink items and raised funds to help make the festive period a little brighter for the homeless community this Christmas and show our support for this fantastic charity. 
 
From providing hot meals to those most in need to hosting English classes for refugees, teaching essential skills and providing vital medical and dental care to the homeless, NOAH Enterprise provides critical aid to thousands of people living across Luton and Central Bedfordshire who literally have nowhere else to turn.
 
A huge thanks to Ellie and everyone at NOAH Enterprise for their kind hospitality in showing us around its Luton shelter this week and for the incredible work they do every day.
