Some take aways from the FEBEA - European Federation of Ethical and Alternative Banks and Financiers conference at Croke Park with interesting presentations from the Irish Minister for Finance Jack Chambers , the European Commissioner for Financial Services Mairead McGuinness , Bogdan Merfea , Daniel Sorrosal , Dónal Traynor MBS LIB QFA , Astrid Mechel , Panagiotis (Panos) Tournavitis and Miki Kresanek among many others. 1) Croke Park is the 4th largest stadium in Europe. It's larger than Maracanã or Bernabéu and they don't even play football there. 2) Sports is a good channel to strengthen local communities. That was a theme which came up again and again. 3) Finance is a big machine with many knobs and gears that can be adjusted to create value for society: Banking Union, Sustainable Finance Framework, Capital Markets Union, Anti-Money Laundering, etc. We also tend to not fully acknowledge the role of European institutions like the European Investment Bank (EIB) or CEB - Council of Europe Development Bank . Many investments wouldn't be possible without them. 4) The Digital Euro seems likely to come (great!) but nobody was mentioning the underlying blockchain technology. It was also an aspect of the seminar on Blockchain and Social Impact last week. The technology is here to stay but is rarely mentioned specifically. 5) The push-back against environmental and social goals is real. The change in mood is hard not to notice. Let's see how the trade-offs will be managed in the coming years. 6) Demand for the offers of ethical and social finance intermediaries remains strong and diverse. Such conferences also show the differences across Europe. 7) There were conversations about the destruction of societies and communities. In a previous research project I visited civil societies in war areas and autocracies (not very well understood!). There might be some applicable learnings from this work.

Irish Minister for finance Jack Chambers is a key guest at this week’s FEBEA annual conference. Held at Croke Park, the budget is not the only news item on the agenda this week in Ireland. We are delighted that the Minister has given his time to attend what promises to be a very insightful and thought provoking event as the gathering considers how ethical finance solutions can support a vibrant social economy both here and across Europe.
