✨ We're proud to have been awarded a Transport Research and Innovation Grant! Electric Aviation Group aims to develop ultra-lightweight, megawatt-scale fuel cell technologies for aerospace applications using innovative digital-twin and machine learning techniques to speed up development. Aerospace requirements are very different from typical ground-based applications, requiring high power densities and the need to meet strict certification standards. Current simulation techniques are prohibitively expensive for developing solutions for this sector and new approaches are required. Our TRIG project will develop the digital-twin techniques which we plan to deploy towards both the development of our megawatt-scale fuel cells and a range of industry challenges. The digital twin technique involves training neural networks to accurately predict the results of complex, multi-physics simulations. The stand-out feature of the trained models is that they can provide high levels of accuracy using only a fraction of simulation time and cost required to build a directly simulated data-model. The approach is based on research from within our fuel cell founding team at Imperial College London. We previously won an Innovate UK Fast Start grant (2022-23) to prove the concept and develop the simulation framework for our organisation’s needs. Work in TRIG project builds upon the Fast Start Programme and aims to advance the method towards commercial application.
