#NextGenThruster : FEEP Tech reaching new heights!! 🚀🥳 ENPULSION secured € 4 Million in funding in a contract with the European Space Agency - ESA for the development of its NextGen MICRO R³. This contract will focus not only on performance enhancement, usability, efficiency, but also on associated manufacturability and assembly processes. ENPULSION CEO Alexander Reissner said “The signing of this important contract is for me another opportunity to personally thank the ESA/ESTEC Team for their trust in our commercial strategy and salute them for their leadership and relentless commitment to supporting the development of FEEP for several decades now. #WSBW2024 : the World Satellite Business Week is currently taking place in the splendide Hotel Westin in Paris, where space leaders gather and discuss the future of our thriving industry. 🛰️🚀 👉 Yesterday, Alexander Reissner participated in an exciting panel on "Leading Sub-systems Manufacturers" together with Thomas Sinn , CEO and Founder of Dcubed , Jun Asakawa , CEO and Co-Founder of Pale Blue , Nicolas CAPET , CEO and Founder of Anywaves , Kevin Dunne , CEO of ETL Systems , Lyon (Brad) King , CEO and Co-Founder of Orbion Space Technology Space, and brilliantly moderated by Blaine Curcio from Novaspace (Merger of Euroconsult & SpaceTec Partners) . 👓 The panel was an engaging discussion on the role of leading sub-systems manufacturers from different angles - solar arrays/deployables, antennas, propulsion, RF components, and how they can achieve and maintain competitive edge amidst heightened competition by including the evolving needs of their customers. 🌌 Alexander stressed the importance of ensuring minimum maneuverability capacity on all spacecraft to minimize collision risk and to design rules of the road fit for efficient space traffic coordination taking into account the reality of today's fast moving industrial dynamics. #GuoWang : some constellation deployments are noisier than others. 🚀First of a long list of anticipated rocket launches planned for the Chinese Guowang/G60 mega-constellation (with the payload capacity of selected rocket design roughly 700 launches for 14,000 sats), the orbital deployment of the first 18 Qianfan (“Thousand Sails”) satellites to a 800-kilometer altitude polar orbit performed by Long March 6A is already raising eyebrows. It is believed that this launch alone generated a cloud of over 700 pieces of space debris, despite new space debris mitigation guidelines published by the Shanghai Institute of Aerospace Systems Engineering in 2023 - and meant to be implemented in 2024 - specifically addressing the issue of launch vehicle orbital stage disposal. While China has yet to publicly comment on this event, there is growing concern on how the low level of transparency of Chinese authorities on this constellation deployment plans – in contrast to Starlink’s own approach to transparency and space safety - will impact commercial space activities and space traffic coordination in LEO in the short run. In just 8 years, China tripled the number of yearly orbital launches it performed from 21 in 2016 to 66 in 2024. During the same period, China’s satellite fleet went up from 181 in 2016 to 700, 245 of which are intended for military purposes. This upwards trend is expected to continue given the size of the mega-constellation and China’s ambitious space programmes. It is however not clear yet to which extent Long March 6A will be used throughout the deployment phase. #SpaceSafety #ConstellationDeployment #SpaceSustainability

As we’ve all returned from SmallSat 2024 inspired by exciting upcoming developments and bold announcements, I would like to point everyone’s attention to this article that outlines the struggles the propulsion industry is facing. This title mentions ‘growing pains’, but I like to think it might well be the exact opposite. Most of the few dozens of EP propulsion companies that emerged in the last years are expectedly hitting some rocky road on their journey to alleged profitability. And it is somewhat of a ‘self-made’ problem. Initially fueled by optimism for propulsion demand projected by exponential forecasts, reality has set in: commercial space activity (excluding mega-constellations) has been stagnating - if not receding - and geopolitical tensions put great pressure on supply chains and exposed their volatility notably with noble gases. I have become very careful with predictions about the propulsion market, as I have been anticipating a consolidation for 5 years now and somehow the number of new propulsion companies keeps on growing completely independently from market reality. Almost every month, another R&D project is emerging from a lab with commercial ambitions. Why is this a problem? Because we are talking about real economics and large-scale investments here. Developing and building a propulsion system is capital intensive. It takes time and experience to get the quality control of an industrial design and an industrial production facility that strike the right balance to compete on global markets. Committing such investments on such unrealistic or not addressable market predictions is not following any logical economic rationale. As a result, many propulsion suppliers still have a long way to go to demonstrate genuine product leadership with unproven low TRL propulsion technologies in combination with commercially non-viable business models while investing heavily in acclaimed industrial capacities. It should be clear by now that the logic of "build it and they will come!" is not working or ever will work in the upstream sector. Why would it be the case? It has never worked in any other (more mature) industry and neither does the "winner takes all" business plan make sense under the assumption and aspiration of becoming part of a healthy supply chain. At the end of day, what makes EP propulsion companies truly dependable for the next decade amidst heightened competition are not exaggerated industrial output claims, price dumping, astronomical marketing budgets mimicking financial and technical maturity or overinflated valuations further eroding investor trust in the space industry: but the ability to win enough customer trust to build long lasting business relationships and move from individual thruster contracts and only institutional R&D contracts to medium and large orders. This can only be achieved through a well-designed profit-oriented business model leveraging secure supply chains and proven industrial capabilities.
