Maritime microwaves?

We’re taking our solid-state, long-pulse high-power microwave technology to the US Navy’s Advanced Naval Technology Exercise Coastal Trident Program (ANTX-CT24) to demonstrate its ability to counter autonomous surface vessels.

Kamikaze USVs pose an asymmetric threat to target ships due to their size, boat forms and advantages in radar and optical systems even in normal sea, air and visibility conditions.

The adoption of commercial technology across modern battlefields has re-shaped the decades-long norm of air superiority—and traditional air defense strategies. 

“We used to make the claim that since 1953 no American has been killed by air attack,” Slife said. “We can’t make that claim anymore. It calls into question, ‘What does air superiority actually look like?’ [Does] it look like 30,000 feet over the Yalu River in 1953 or does it look like below 3,000 feet with quadcopters with a hand grenade slung to the bottom of them?"

Another important effort by DoD to better collaborate with industry to rapidly develop, deliver and deploy counter-swarm technology—with Epirus HPM leading the pack. 

"The services or combatant commanders could also choose to embark on a prototyping effort for a particular solution like the U.S. Army did, for example, with its Epirus-developed Leonidas high-power microwave counter-drone solution, Parent noted. Some solutions could be chosen for immediate acquisition, he added, because a solution showed enough maturity to address current or future threats."
