Territory design - step three: Perform a SWOT Analysis A SWOT analysis can help you account for other factors that might impact your organization's performance, allowing you to synthesize and leverage qualitative data that could impact your sales territories. Here's a breakdown of the process: STRENGTHS Consider any competitive advantage you have within your market. Do you have more brand recognition? Do you offer a better product? Do you have a more experienced team? You might also consider the strengths of specific team members, their industry expertise, and other attributes that align with your organization's goals. WEAKNESSES Take inventory of any vulnerabilities that are impacting your organization. Are there regions or territories that are particularly weak? Less-than-satisfactory client relationships? Over- or underworked team members? Examine where there may be inefficiencies or overlaps within your current territories and operational processes. OPPORTUNITIES Identify potential areas for growth and expansion. Are there any emerging market trends that align with your product offering? Untapped regions or verticals? What about technological advancements or software tools that could streamline your processes? THREATS Recognize external threats that could jeopardize your long-term success: competitive pressures, economic downturns or regulatory changes, for example, could affect demand for your products or services. Consider, as well, any threats to your team structure—if a competitor offers more opportunities for their salespeople, for instance, you may risk losing top performers.
