With a master’s degree in biotechnology and a PhD in molecular allergology, Neera was excited to get the opportunity to join ALK and contribute to innovating research within food allergy: "I get to work with and learn from some of the best researchers in the field of allergy here at ALK. I am involved in projects aimed at innovating not only how we treat but also how we diagnose food allergies – projects that I believe could potentially become a part of revolutionising the field of food allergy treatment in the future. I feel equally proud and happy to be right here at the heart of it." At ALK, the continued development of our leaders is a key priority. 👇 ‘Leading with impact’ is our annual leadership training at ALK, dedicated to empowering our leaders to thrive and inspire in equal measure. This year’s training brought together 23 leaders from locations across Europe to meet in the beautiful surroundings of our headquarters in Hørsholm, Denmark. Over the course of two days, the leaders were guided through ALK’s leadership model, enhancing their capability to lead their teams in alignment with ALK’s cultural beliefs and to embrace important topics such as inclusive leadership and agile working methods. Rafał Niedzielski , Senior Sales Manager at ALK Poland, reflects on his experience: “Leadership is an ongoing journey of growth and refinement. This programme has given me the opportunity to perceive myself from a different perspective as a leader. Happy one-year anniversary to our CEO, Peter Halling ! 🎊 Reflecting on the past year, he shares some key learnings and aspirations: “I entered ALK with high expectations to the level of expertise and passion of my new colleagues. I can honestly say that my expectations were met. I am proud of the level of knowledge that lives in ALK and of how our shared purpose and dedication pervade the organisation. However, many don’t notice that billions of microscopic creatures join them on their retreat in the home’s humid conditions. House dust mites thrive in such conditions, especially in our beds as they feed on our dead skin-cells. These two easy tips might help you minimise the presence of these unwelcome guests and keep house dust mites from spoiling your holiday home relaxation: 👉 Wash bed linens, blankets, pillows, duvets, and mattress pads regularly. Frequent washes in high temperatures can help to eliminate mites and their allergens. 👉 Ventilate the house as soon as you get there to keep humidity low and create a less favourable environment for the mites to thrive in. Penicillin is an antibiotic often prescribed for treating various bacterial infections. But have you ever heard of penicillin allergy? 🤔 Although nearly 100 years have passed since penicillin was discovered as the world’s first antibiotic, it remains the safest and most effective antibiotic available to treat a broad range of bacterial infections. Penicillin allergy occurs when your immune system mistakenly identifies the medicine as a threat, similar to an infection. Here are three important things to know about the allergy: 🩺 Research has shown that penicillin allergy may be over-reported, meaning that many patients believe that they are allergic, when they could in fact safely take penicillin. Removing an incorrect penicillin allergy diagnosis from a patient can improve patient outcomes, reduce healthcare costs, and advance the fight against antimicrobial resistance. 🤧 Allergic reactions to penicillin usually occur within an hour, including symptoms like skin rashes, fever, swelling, wheezing, or a runny nose. Severe and less common reactions include anaphylaxis – a serious, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction, requiring prompt and effective emergency treatment. 📈 Penicillin allergy can develop in anybody, but a few factors may increase your risk, including a history of other allergies, previous allergic reactions to medicines, genetic predisposition, or frequent use of penicillin. Passion and expertise have fueled Jacob Ihlemann ’s 22 year-long career with ALK – taking him across the Atlantic and back. ✈️ Armed with a master’s degree in biology and a PhD in medicine, Jacob joined ALK at our headquarters in Hørsholm, Denmark, in 2002, to devise new analytical methods and update our quality control processes. When an opportunity arose to relocate to ALK in Idaho, USA in 2011, Jacob was quick to embrace it: “My expatriate stay at ALK’s site in Idaho, gave me invaluable insights for my personal and professional growth. Continuing my analytical work there gave me the opportunity to experience firsthand how our raw materials are produced, which provided vital knowledge for me to implement in my analytical work. At the same time, I gained an international network and a more global perspective,” Jacob says. After two years abroad, Jacob became a connecting link between the laboratories in Idaho and Hørsholm: “I returned to Denmark with a focus on fusing my newly obtained knowledge to understand allergens’ interaction with the immune system. This work provided new knowledge that we are now implementing in our studies in food allergy.” Driven by his passion to help people living with allergies, Jacob took another turn in his career at ALK and now uses his extensive experience to educate both colleagues and healthcare professionals in the complexities of allergic diseases: “My motivation continues to be people living with the chronic disease that allergy is. How do you make cross-functional collaboration a success? You make it fun and add in some competition. 🤹 When our ALK US commercial team met during their national team meeting in September, they invited key collaborators from various departments in ALK for a day focused on teambuilding and alignment on top priorities. Throughout the day, they included several fun breakout activities to foster collaboration: “These meetings are all about bringing teams across the US organisation closer together to enhance teamwork, ignite creativity and optimise effectiveness,” says Dan Commerford , Executive Director and Head of US Pharma Commercial Operations at ALK US. During the day, different themes were covered, spanning improvement of communication skills and sharing best practices across different functions in ALK. “Collaboration is essential to our success as a company. Building time into the agenda for interactive and fun activities has significantly improved our cross-functional partnerships in the US, leading to a deeper understanding among colleagues. But for some, the popular fruit may cause an itchy mouth. 🍎 Did you know that allergens from certain foods or plants can have a similar structure to pollen and therefore may lead to allergic reactions – even if you’re not allergic to the specific food? This phenomenon is called allergic cross-reactions, and for people with birch pollen allergy, such reactions are quite common. Apples, curry, hazelnut, carrot, pear, kiwi, tomato, and celery have all been associated with allergic cross-reactions to birch pollen and may cause symptoms like itching in the mouth and throat. Some people may also experience gastrointestinal issues and in some cases itchy rashes.
