Tuesday's election in the US brings a critical question to light. To what degree is Europe dependent on critical infrastructure and security guarantees from the US? Now, more than ever, it is crucial for Europe to critically evaluate its reliance on foreign infrastructure, particularly in the digital realm. With foreign cloud providers controlling 87% of the European cloud market and hence, European data, now is the right time to ask if this is something we should be comfortable with. Being dependent on foreign clouds, at a time when digital infrastructure is critical for the functioning of our societies, by extension means that we are dependent on foreign leaders who could make unpredictable changes on a whim. This, combined with the added risk of a trade war, is a scenario that could put European companies and organizations hosting their data on foreign clouds at great risk. At evroc, we emphasize the importance of returning data sovereignty to Europe, ensuring our continent's data remains under the control of the users themselves, protected by European legislation, enforced by European courts. On Saturday, President Joe Biden signed a bill that reauthorizes Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). What this means in practice is that the US Senate has given US intelligence services a renewed mandate to continue to collect foreign intelligence information about non-US citizens located outside the United States (i.e. most of the world's population). National security adviser Jake Sullivan has called the program “one of the United States’ most vital intelligence collection tools.” It is important to note that this intelligence work takes place without the consent of the foreign governments whose citizens come under surveillance - the euphemism used for what is in fact espionage. This intelligence work often violates the laws in the territories where the surveillance takes place - e.g. GDPR in the European Union as those subject to surveillance are not asked to consent to their data being collected, stored and analyzed. If you use common Internet services and applications hosted by the American cloud hyperscalers (i.e. most of the Internet), your data and your privacy is at risk. It is as simple at that. And the same goes for proprietary corporate information as various leaks have shown that US surveillance has been used for industrial espionage against European allies. At evroc, we believe in European sovereignty, data privacy and building a sustainable future for Europe where our laws govern what data can be collected.
