Eyevensys is a clinical-stage biotechnology company that specializes in first-in-class, non-viral vector gene therapy for treating major ophthalmic conditions, particularly degenerative retinal diseases and retinal vascular diseases such as wet AMD and dry AMD.

Eyevensys is a clinical stage, private, biotechnology company developing its innovative EyeCET platform to enable the sustained intraocular production of therapeutic proteins to treat a broad range of ophthalmic disease.

EyeCET stands for the eye ciliary muscle electro-transfection technology, which uses electroporation to deliver plasmids coding for therapeutic proteins in the eye. EyeCET is safe and non-viral, and it enables the ciliary muscle cells to sustainably produce therapeutic proteins locally. 

Eyevensys believes its EyeCET technology can improve short and long-term therapeutic outcomes, greatly enhancing patient compliance and significantly improve the tolerability of treatment. 

Eyevensys’ lead product EYS606 is a potential new treatment for patients with non-infectious Uveitis (NIU), the 4th cause of blindness in the world. 

EYS606 uses Eyevensys’ proprietary electro-transfection injection system (ETIS) to deliver a plasmid encoding for the production of an anti-TNF alpha-alpha cytokine that has been shown to play a pivotal role in mediating intraocular inflammation in NIU. EYS606 which been granted an Orphan designation by the EMA for the treatment of NIU, has received in February 2017 the regulatory clearances from the UK MHRA and the French ANSM Health Agencies to begin a Phase I/II clinical trials. 

Subsequently, a multicentre clinical study has just been initiated in France and the UK.

EYEVENSYS presented on the efficacy and durability of EYS809, a non-viral gene therapy for wet AMD, at Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) 2023 last week. Preclinical data showed greater reduction in both the incidence and area of leaky CNV lesions with EYS809 vs intravitreal aflibercept. The EYS809 dual plasmid is the first of its kind, resulting in production of the well-established anti-VEGF protein, aflibercept, as well as the promising novel candidate, decorin. Decorin has been found to play key roles in inhibiting angiogenic factors and regulating various pathways involved in retinal diseases, including the formation of CNV and RPE barrier breakdown. Studies are underway to assess how EYS809 limits subretinal fibrosis, and we look forward to further development of the program.

EYEVENSYS CEO Patricia Zilliox, PhD, recently joined the Oracles of Eye Innovation Development of Drug Delivery Technology webinar to discuss Eyevensys’ innovative non-viral gene therapy platform. In the presentation, Patricia describes how the technology uses electrotransfection to non-invasively deliver plasmids to the eye, enabling the local production of therapeutic proteins for an extended period of time. Panelists agreed that the approach has transformative potential in the management of retinal diseases.
