Did you know that 95 percent of people who receive a fountain pen as a gift write their name with it first? ✍ There are lots of different stories and facts about fountain pens, some serious and some funky. One thing you can do is write upside down with it. It's not easy and the result might be a bit messy at first but give it a try. It's also true that you can write about 2500 words with a standard ink cartridge (by way of comparison, this post contains 192 words). Plus, using a fountain pen is practical because it reduces hand pain and fatigue, as less pressure is needed when your hand is holding the pen. Fun facts or not, we know that handwriting is important for learning and training our memory. It can also be a special way to show appreciation. We think the fountain pen is a particularly valuable tool for this. Forest Europe is a voluntary pan-European forest policy process at the ministerial level through which its Signatories want to strengthen their cooperation in conserving and sustainably managing their forests. At the 9th Ministerial Conference of "Forest Europe" at the beginning of October in Bonn, the 44 member states and the EU Commission decided to set up a central advisory body to pool expertise and research results on the protection of forests from damage caused by the climate crisis. We were very happy to support this meeting by presenting the 165 participants with a customized metal pencil case as a gift. Why do we care so much about this? Because sustainability and environmental protection have always been deeply rooted in our corporate culture. An example from another corner of the world: Since the 1980s, Faber-Castell has been committed to a unique forest project in the Brazilian Cerrado, where we manage around 4.5 million pine trees and plant 300,000 new seedlings every year to ensure consistent reforestation. Today we celebrate World Animal Day! While you experience the soothing sound of Brazil's vibrant birdlife, we would like to talk about our forestry project “Animalis”. In this long-term biodiversity initiative, scientists regularly monitor the variety of animal species, and their distribution and colonization are documented. A quarter of our managed forests in Prata, southeastern Brazil, is left untouched and has evolved into a habitat for local wildlife. Species like the anteater, macaw, maned wolf, porcupine and white-eared puffbird find a home here. Currently, we monitor over 720 species of animals in our managed forests. Faber-Castell was able to achieve a satisfactory business performance in the 2023/24 fiscal year despite increasingly challenging market conditions. The company could maintain a strong return on sales above the pre-Covid level of 19/20, even though these declined slightly compared to the previous financial year. Following the second-best turnover in the company's history in the previous reporting year, the Faber-Castell Group recorded a -4.7% decline in turnover to EUR 618.4 million (previous year: EUR 649.2 million). Even so, profitability remains in the high single-digit range. "The ‘ONE Faber-Castell’ Group strategy adopted in 2022 is showing initial success in all focus areas thanks to the measures already implemented to increase efficiency." says CEO Stefan Leitz . For the current financial year 2024/25, he expects ambitious currency-adjusted sales growth while maintaining profitability.
