Led by an experienced team of managers with diverse business backgrounds, commercialization experience, and strong entrepreneurial knowhow, Fannin partners with promising life science innovators to co-found and actively manage startup companies.  Fannin provides its startups with central office space, seed capital and a vast network of resources. To address the root cause of Houston’s commercialization gap, Fannin works directly with the city’s top-tier, higher education institutions to recruit aspiring entrepreneurs to join its apprenticeship program which provides on-the-job training to collaboratively lead its portfolio companies from innovation to commercialization.

Future Outlook: Fannin has successfully validated this business model over the last seven years and is now in the process of scaling it up.  Another 15-20 portfolio companies are expected to be developed in the next 3 - 5 years.

He is currently a PhD student at Baylor College of Medicine and is researching the role of CYP450 enzymes in lung injury and the microbiome. He holds an MS in Pharmacology & Toxicology from Long Island University, where he published significant research on asthma treatment. He has also contributed to impactful cardiovascular research at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. As the co-founder of TOXINDIA, a preclinical CRO, he has driven substantial company growth and ensured regulatory compliance. He is passionate about strength training, non-fiction literature, and the stock market.

I planned to share this earlier this month, but was delayed by Hurricane Beryl and its aftermath!

The recent acquisition of Glycotope GmbH by Pentixapharm AG highlights ongoing activity in the field but also presents some unique aspects that may differentiate it  from other recent deals.

At first glance, the fit isn't obvious. Glycotope is an antibody company with multiple programs, none involving radiopharmaceuticals. Pentixapharma is an RLI/RLT company using peptides as its targeting ligand.

Major transactions in the last year have involved late-stage assets with isotope infrastructure, such as Elilill Pharma and Point Therapeutics, Bristol Myers Squibb and RayzeBio, and AstraZeneca and Fusion Pharmaceuticals. 

Others have involved ligand platforms, such as Elilill Pharma and Radionetics Oncology and Aktis Oncology, and Novartis and Mariana Oncology.

What is Pentixapharma gaining? It is acquiring people and infrastructure, though interestingly, not related to radiopharma. It gets a pipeline of antibodies, which could potentially be used to create RLTs, although antibodies may not be the most desirable RLT ligands. However, it also gains a target discovery engine focused on glycoproteins.

As RLT technology matures, novel targets are become increasingly important. Are we going to see target identification platforms as the focus of the next round of acquisitions? Further, does our approach to target selection/validation change with RLTs?

Traditionally, validating the biology of a target has been a critical first step, since most anti-cancer drugs work by modulating cancer biology in some way. This has been true even with ADCs. In contrast, radiopharma works by brute force -- if we deliver the isotope to the cancer, we expect it will be killed.

The path to a clinical imaging/dosimetry trial with a non-therapeutic isotope is relatively rapid and affordable. So rather than in-depth biological validation of a target, could we use patient imaging/dosimetry to validate a target/ligand pair?Further, dosimetry could provide insight into both efficacy (delivery to the tumor) and safety (distribution to normal tissue).

Do RLTs hold the promise of using more predictable physics rather than complex biology for the selection of targets and drugs? If so, that would be a paradigm shift.
