“The political winds are not favoring the combination of large firms right now, but on the other hand even if you combine these firms together, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, JP Morgan are all still three, or four, or five times bigger in terms of asset size. Even for the network business — and this could be a meaningful addition to Discover’s network business in terms of number of transactions — Mastercard is still five times bigger and Visa is ten times bigger. So it’s hard to make a compelling case against the deal, but that’s very much where the political winds are blowing right now.”
