Ferroglobe PLC operates in the silicon and specialty metals industry in the United States, Europe, and internationally. It provides silicone chemicals that are used in a range of applications, including personal care items, construction-related products, health care products, and electronics, as well as silicon metal for primary and secondary aluminum producers; silicomanganese, which is used as deoxidizing agent in the steel manufacturing process; and ferromanganese that is used as a deoxidizing, desulphurizing, and degassing agent in the removal of nitrogen and other harmful elements from steel. The company also offers ferrosilicon products that are used to produce stainless steel, carbon steel, and various other steel alloys, as well as to manufacture electrodes and aluminum; calcium silicon, which is used in the deoxidation and desulfurization of liquid steel, and production of coatings for cast iron pipes, as well as in the welding process of powder metal and in pyrotechnics; and nodularizers and inoculants, which are used in the production of iron. In addition, it provides silica fume, a by-product of the electrometallurgical process of silicon metal and ferrosilicon. Further, the company operates quartz mines in Spain, South Africa, the United States, and Canada; and low-ash metallurgical coal mines in the United States, as well as holds interests in hydroelectric power plant in France. It serves silicone chemical, aluminum, and steel manufacturers; auto companies and their suppliers; ductile iron foundries; manufacturers of photovoltaic solar cells and computer chips; and concrete producers. The company was formerly known as VeloNewco Limited and changed its name to Ferroglobe PLC in December 2015. The company was incorporated in 2015 and is headquartered in London, the United Kingdom. Ferroglobe PLC is a subsidiary of Grupo Villar Mir, S.A.U.

🏅 Last week Ferroglobe PLC was honored to receive the award for the ‘most innovative business project in the field of technology' in the ‘XVI Premios Cinco Días a la Innovación Empresarial’ ceremony, in recognition of our R&D project on #siliconmetal powder for batteries and other advanced technologies developed at our plant in Sabón (Galicia, Spain).

💡 Benoist OLLIVIER, our Chief Technology and Innovation Officer, represented the company by receiving this prize, which acknowledges our continued history of innovation and our dedication to building a more #sustainable world, by supporting the development of the #electricvehicle and the #decarbonization of transport.

🔋 As leader of this strategic area for the future of Ferroglobe, Benoist shared in an interview with Cinco Días the keys to the project, the milestones achieved, its extraordinary potential in essential markets for the #energytransition and the next steps ahead to continue creating value for society as a whole.

“We aim to lead the markets for the production of silicon metal and its alloys. In the area of innovation, our ambition is to lead the supply of high-purity silicon metal, providing the highest quality product to accelerate the energy transition, and to continue to meet the targets set out in our ESG strategy for the period 2022-2026”, affirmed Benoist to Cinco Días.

🔋 In 2017, Ferroglobe PLC initiated an R&D project on #siliconmetal powder for batteries and other advanced technologies at its plant in Sabón (Galicia, Spain). After several years of investment and industrial research, we succeeded in producing an extremely high purity silicon metal through an innovative, efficient process with a limited impact on the environment.

🚀 This milestone has led us to join different industrial consortiums and sign several MOUs with leading companies in the sector, turning Ferroglobe into one of the market's key suppliers. As a result, the project is currently in a transition from #innovation to large-scale industrialization and commercialization.
