Fjällräven is a Swedish brand specializing in outdoor equipment, mostly upscale clothing and luggage. It was founded in 1960 by Åke Nordin from Örnsköldsvik in northern Sweden. The company is a subsidiary of Fenix Outdoor International AG and is known for its durable and lightweight backpacks.

In 1960, Åke Nordin founded Fjällräven in the Swedish town of Örnsköldsvik. Since then, Fjällräven has made a commitment to high quality and high-end design, while staying true to our mission of developing timeless, functional and durable outdoor equipment, acting responsible towards people, animals and nature and inspiring people to get outside.

We want to inspire and enable more people to experience nature. We do this by developing clothing and equipment that make the outside safer, warmer, dryer and generally more enjoyable. And by running events that provide the framework and support to make nature more accessible. 

We’re a team of nature lovers, some more experienced than others, that likes to spend as much time outdoors as possible. In our offices and our stores we are designers, product developers, buyers, administrators, marketers, communicators, sales staff, customer service reps and business developers. In nature though, we’re all the same.

Meet one of our Fjällräven Polar 2023 alumni, Nooshin. This time last year, she was trying to decide how to celebrate her 60th birthday. Happily for us, it was a coincidental conversation with a colleague that resulted in Nooshin earning her spot on the expedition. She travelled 300km by dog sled across Arctic Scandinavia, working with her teammates, managing her dogs and adapting to life far above the Arctic Circle. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing.

What does it mean to be a sustainable outdoor company?

For us here at Fjällräven in Sweden, it means that all our products are designed to last through decades of use, to be passed on to the next generation, or sold on the second-hand market where they can begin new adventures with new users. That way, fewer products will be produced, less energy will be consumed and fewer products will end up as waste.

It also means creating a balance between the need for functional, durable products and the need to make the least possible impact on the environment while producing them. It means saying no to effective but harmful chemicals such as PFCs. No to the mistreatment of animals. No to resource-intense materials. And it means saying no to leaning back and thinking the work is done. After all, just like our products, we too are in it for the long run.
