60 years in operation and no stop in sight!

Our Flender gearboxes continue to run in the famous Danube Tower in Vienna, Austria’s capital city. At 252m above sea level, it is Austria’s highest construction; first opened to the public in 1964, the gear boxes have been running in the tower ever since.

It was only in 2023 that the two Flender Redurex gearboxes required its first overhaul after a heavy thunderstorm in Vienna. After travelling to Flender in Voerde, Germany we gave the gearboxes new bearings, seals and reworked the chain pinion. 

"The Tower Restaurant and the Tower Café in the Danube Tower have been running smoothly since 1964 thanks to the gear units from Flender. After the necessary overhaul, we are looking forward to many more decades with German drive technology," said Hermann Krammer, Managing Director and Mario Meyer, Head of Technology at Donauturm Aussichtsturm- und Restaurantbetriebsgesellschaft. 

Following its return transportation, the rotating platform went back into operation at the end of November after 30 hours of installation. Two drive combinations rotate the coffee house level and the restaurant level in the Danube Tower Vienna.

Nowadays, you would outfit this kind of application with more efficient and compact designs such as a two-stage Flender standard industrial gearbox coupled with a geared motor.  

Onto the next sixty years! And thanks to the team of the Danube Tower for the project at this dazzling height!

Our brand Winergy is known as one of the pioneers of the wind energy industry. And now, for the first time, we are also sourcing our own renewable energy straight from wind turbines equipped with our Winergy gearboxes. 

In a pioneering initiative with ECO2GROW, an innovative player in the field of renewable energies, we have concluded several Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) for the direct purchase of green electricity from wind and solar plants. The selected wind farm in southern Germany runs with our Winergy gearboxes. The partnership is another decisive step in our sustainability strategy and supports our goal of being CO2-neutral by 2030.
 
By using renewable energy from German wind and photovoltaic plants, we are saving 7,500 tons of CO2 and cover approximately 12% of our electricity requirements for our German sites.
