We were discussing the future of mobility and how to get to lower-emissions buses in the future at #ZEB2023
 
Daniel Zellinger was on an interesting panel sharing the Flix situation and our vision for the future and some of the key takeaways were:
 
🔍As announced in our ESG report: 
We aim at full decarbonization in Europe by 2040.
A fleet transformation is a key lever of our climate strategy to achieve this.
 
🌍 There’s no carbon-neutral technology for long-distance operations by a coach yet; nonetheless, we are investigating diverse alternative drives and fuels to cut our carbon footprint anyway.
 
🌟 More effort is needed from all stakeholders: everybody has a role to play in the ecological transition. We are eager to do our part, but we need others to back us in this.
 
🛣️ In the debate on zero-emission mobility, more consideration is needed for long-distance coaches: to be able to rely on the right infrastructure is crucial, and political will is needed to get this infrastructure built.

How do Flixies make an impact?
 
Meet Elisa CZORNYJ, Team Lead of Operations in our Paris office. She has a deep appreciation for new experiences and has had some adventures, like surfing on the sand dunes of Chile, jumping out of planes, and navigating kayaks almost 700 meters below the surface in a mine.
 
When she’s not seeking out a new and exciting experience, Elisa makes an impact by cultivating a culture of proactivity on her team. She fosters a trust-based environment by being transparent with her team members, especially with the mistakes and setbacks she encounters.
 
In Elisa’s words, “I believe in empowering my team to be proactive and problem-solvers, it contributes to our collective success. I also think it's important to have regular exchanges and be really transparent about what type of blockers I may be having.”

🚌 🌍¡Bienvenido Chile!

Last week we marked an important milestone in our expansion journey as we launched our operations in Chile.

The inaugural rides departed on October 5th, officially marking our presence in Chile and making it #Flix 42nd country worldwide! 💚

The first happy passengers hopped on board on the routes between Santiago and Viña del Mar, San Antonio, and Coquimbo 🌇🌅

How do Flixies push boundaries? 
 
Meet Paulo Azevedo, a Senior Software Solutions Architect in Berlin whose favorite comfort food is spaghetti carbonara (but please, no cream in the sauce!)
 
When he’s not trying his hand in the kitchen, Paulo pushes boundaries by organizing FlixLabs, our quarterly hackathon. Over the course of three days of work, Paulo and his teammates leveraged Google’s Dialogflow technology to create a hotline for customers to check if a ticket was available before connecting them with a customer service agent. This required the team to work with unfamiliar languages, like Polish, which nobody in the team spoke.
 
In Paulo’s words, "I was working with a colleague from the localization team, and we were going through all sorts of barriers. It was stressful, but it never crossed our minds to offer a lesser experience in any language."

Meet Jesús Martínez-Blanco, a Principal Data Scientist in our Berlin office. When he isn’t harnessing the power of collaboration around a whiteboard, he loves going to jazz concerts at any of the many jazz clubs in Berlin.

Jesús lives the Flix4 value We Win Together every Thursday when his team gathers around a whiteboard in the office to tackle particularly difficult challenges. The latest challenge they tackled on the whiteboard? Price elasticity. The team aimed to determine how much customers are willing to pay for a bus or train ticket through an algorithm. It wasn't a straightforward task, as some parts of the network lacked sufficient data, but whiteboarding sessions came to the rescue.

In Jesús’ words, "It's never the case that a single individual brings a brilliant idea that goes straight into production. It's always that somebody might bring a bright idea and then polish that idea with ideas from others."

We are happy to share our results from the first half-year of 2023, and we proudly announce that it has been best first half-year in Flix history. 
A few highlights from this include:
  
🚍 🚊 53% growth YOY in passengers traveling with FlixBus, FlixTrain, Greyhound, and Kâmil Koç to 36+ million.  
📈 54% growth YOY in total turnover taking it to EUR 860 m.  
🌍 New markets opening with Finland and Greece rounding out our network meaning we now connect all the mainland EU 
✅ Our first ESG report was published highlighting our commitment to sustainability with our goal of being carbon neutral in Europe by 2040. 
 
Flix is now present in 41 countries on 4 continents and is getting ready to launch operations in Chile in Q4 2023, and India next year which will further cement our status as a global travel-tech company. 
Sustainability is a key aspect of our business, and we are committed to being a part of the solution in mobility.  
 
That is why we focus on different alternative fuels, including our most recent partnership with Scania to equip 50 buses with BIO-LNG technologies to be able to use more sustainable fuels by 2025 as part of our Fleet Transformation Strategy.
