This February, we’re honoring trailblazers who undoubtedly helped shape our industry. 

We’re grateful for entrepreneurs like John and William Ward, who used Civil War freight wagons to start E.E. Ward Moving and Storage in 1881, making it our nation’s oldest continuously run Black-owned business. We’re grateful for innovators like Frederick McKinley Jones, who patented the first automatic truck refrigeration technology, ensuring the delivery of fresh food, medicine, and blood to hospitals and battlefields during World War II. We’re grateful for leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who was in Memphis standing in solidarity with sanitation truck drivers when he was killed. 

We’re grateful for the drivers from Mary Fields, who became the first Black woman to run a route for the USPS in the late 19th century, to Ivery Stokes, who became the first Black woman to drive a truck for Walmart generations later, to the 500,000 Black truckers who are on the road today. 

At Flock Freight, Black History Month isn’t just about honoring the past, it is about recognizing the future that’s only possible because of those who defied discrimination, broke barriers, and forever altered the course of our world. Without these leaders, our industry — and, indeed, our company — would not exist as it does today or as it will tomorrow. 

This month, and every month, we’re putting that gratitude in action by growing a company that is as inclusive as it is innovative.
