According to a new report released by the California Energy Commission, long-duration energy storage will play an essential role in helping California meet its decarbonization goals, with up to 37 GW expected to be needed to achieve a zero-emissions grid by 2045.

The report was prepared by researchers from Energy and Environmental Economics, Inc., UC San Diego, and Form Energy, and is the most in-depth study on the role of long-duration energy storage in California to date.

Since breaking ground 7 months ago on Form Factory 1 in Weirton, West Virginia, our team - along with hundreds of local workers and tradespeople - have poured countless hours of hard work and energy into bringing the factory to life in record time. 

Yesterday, we achieved a great milestone. We raised the factory's final steel beam, and hosted a ceremony to celebrate the completion of the building’s framing and the importance of building new manufacturing facilities in America.

Overall, it was a wonderful day in Weirton! Following the beam raising ceremony, we hosted another Form Factory 1 hiring event and were pleased to meet with so many great candidates from the region.

What can long-duration energy storage do for California?

The California Energy Commission just published a study which found that #LDES, including multi-day storage, could play a key role in helping California cost-effectively meet its decarbonization goals – with anywhere between 5-37 GW of storage anticipated to be needed by 2045.

Conducted using Energy and Environmental Economics, Inc. and Form Energy's best-in-class grid modeling tools, it’s the most in-depth study on the potential for LDES in California yet.

At Form Energy, we’re fortunate to work with colleagues who bring a spirit of humanity, creativity, and excellence to work everyday. Today, we’d like to spotlight Marie Mayer, Director of Validation at Form.  

Marie leads a team of engineers responsible for testing and ensuring that our manufacturing lines are set up to produce Form’s iron-air batteries at scale. 

Prior to working at Form Energy, Marie received her PhD in solar materials science and energy from UC Berkeley, and worked in the electric car battery industry for 10+ years. Over time, Marie realized that the next critical challenge she wanted to tackle was grid-scale energy storage. So, last year, she joined the Form Energy team in Pittsburgh. 

Here’s why she joined, in her own words: 

“I started thinking more about where electric power was coming from and recognized the importance of the challenge Form Energy is working to solve by creating grid-scale storage for clean and reliable energy. My job with Form allows me to use many of the skills I’ve built to support American manufacturing too. I’m proud to have two chances to change the world with one company!”
