CARB-X will award US$1 million to Fuse Diagnostics to demonstrate proof-of-concept and feasibility ahead of the development of a rapid, instrument-free diagnostic for the detection of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG). 
 
Gonorrhea, caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, is the second-most reported bacterial sexually transmitted infection, infecting approximately 82 million people globally in 2020. Patients with gonorrhea may experience serious health effects, including pelvic inflammatory disease, chronic pain, and infertility. Untreated gonorrhea can spread to the blood stream, which can be life threatening, and increase the risk of HIV infection. 
 
The award will fund the demonstration of performance of Fuse's CT/NG test, Apex, on clinical samples. Apex CT/NG utilizes innovative device designs and molecular technologies with the potential to deliver accuracy that is equivalent to lab-based PCR systems in an ultra-rapid, low-cost format ideally suited to flexible global deployment, including areas with remote access to secondary healthcare in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
