Last week, I had one of the best meals I've experienced in Los Angeles. Was this feast at a fancy restaurant in Beverly Hills? A hipster bistro in The Arts District in downtown LA? No. It was in a grocery store. 

The brand-new Gelson's Markets at the West Edge mixed-use development project has a 70-seat indoor/outdoor restaurant and bar with an extensive beer and wine list, a sushi chef who provides omakase, and a wide menu selection, including items from celebrated chef Wolfgang Puck.

Even though our firm designed this new prototype store for Gelson's, I didn't expect it to be the best meal I've had in LA. But the new Gelsons wine and sushi bar is outstanding and has turned out to be a massive hit with the community as the place to eat, drink, socialize, and hang out with locals. 

In a world where most grocery stores have become ruthlessly efficient warehouses for unappetizing commodity products, finding a local operator who cares about taste and the love of food is delightful.
