When I was 18, I walked into an Army recruiting office looking for something more. What I found changed everything. My decision to enlist that day turned out to be one of the best I've ever made. It gave me more than just discipline and purpose. It proved to me that we are so much more capable than what we often allow ourselves to believe. I started my career as a Private, the bottom of the military hierarchy. From there, I received a nomination to West Point. When I finally got out, I had the opportunity to work on Wall Street and in Silicon Valley, to attend Harvard and Stanford, to learn a language in a foreign country, to start companies people actually wanted to join, and to work daily alongside people who inspired me. As uncomfortable as it is to share personal accomplishments so publicly, I believe it's important for young people—particularly those curious about service, and especially those who doubt their own abilities—to understand just how transformative military service can be. None of these experiences would have been remotely possible for me had I not enlisted. If you don’t believe me, consider this: when I was in high school, I literally didn’t even know college applications were due until other students started receiving their acceptance letters. But what I value most from my time in the military isn't even the personal growth. It’s the deeper truths about community that have become more apparent to me the further in the rearview my military service gets, and the more lives I get to inhabit because of that experience. 1) The best thing about life is the other people in it. 2) None of us chose to be here. These truths feel especially crucial today as our nation grapples with deep division while simultaneously facing a technological wave so massive it defies comprehension. It's worth considering: if you could roll an eight billion-sided die to determine where you'd be born, would you take that gamble over being born in America? Being here, in this place, at this time, is a kind of jackpot that none of us earned. That privilege demands something of us—not guilt, but gratitude expressed through responsibility to our communities. Our country isn't perfect. No nation is. But just as my military service proved to me that I was capable of far more than I allowed myself to believe, I remain convinced that America is capable of far more than we sometimes allow ourselves to imagine. We are an exceptional nation filled with extraordinary people, many of whom, like I once was, might be searching for something more. To them, I say: find it in service—whatever form that may take. And to my fellow veterans, thank you. Each of you has your own transformation story, and most of you gave far more, in far more challenging circumstances, than I ever did. You remind us that life's greatest purpose is in serving something larger than ourselves. And yours is an example that is more necessary today than ever before. #veteransday #beatnavy
