‘It’s too much work,’ is a phrase we often hear on the subject of publishing content and being active on social media. The majority of our peers and partners just can’t dedicate the resources to the production of written content.

We fully appreciate this sentiment. We also agree that it’s a lot of work. It takes time to put out meaningful content. Oftentimes, the ROI is uncertain at best, and you are left wondering if anyone actually reads your epistles. But for us, it has become part of our DNA and a way of doing business.

We like to think that we have something worthwhile to say. As an LEI industry insider, we talk to everyone from legislators and peers and partners on a daily basis. We also carefully follow the news stream. We do it to enhance our offering and internal business processes, but we also do it to engage with our customers in a meaningful way. 

Our articles are often inspired by a question we get from a customer or a partner. We figure that if it’s important to them, it may be important to other people too. Considering the widespread and ever growing usage of LEI codes, we think that someday soon, this will be relevant to everyone.

When the likes of #G20, the #worldbank, the #FSB (Financial Stability Board), #BIS (Bank of International Settlements), #CPMI (Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructure), #GLEIF, and the #ECB all stress the importance of cross-border payment legislation, the rest of the world has to take notice. 

It is a topic relevant for everyone - individuals, households, the small business owners, the multinationals, banks, and payment processors like #Wise and #Paypal. While domestic payments can be done instantly and digitally, international payments are slow and costly and can be a deterrent of growth to small and medium-sized companies. 

Furthermore, as per the ECB on October 31, 2023, ‘Migrant workers, who support one in nine people globally through remittances, can face exorbitant costs when sending money home.’ 

It is a prerequisite for enabling instant and transparent cross-border payments to have a valid LEI code. This means that ultimately, everyone will need to get an LEI code. This is also why India experienced a 308% increase in the acquisition of LEIs over a two-year period, when they adopted the cross-border payments legislation back in 2021 (cf. the below chart).

The legislation is expected to go into effect in 2027. There’s good reason for banks and payment processors to get ready by getting the right infrastructure in place. By partnering with someone like us, they can have their own LEI white label site to manage and validate LEIs for their clients.

We’re in the deep throes of the busy season. In the world of LEIs, this refers to the period between October and February, when most people renew their LEI codes.

There’s lots of renewals and transfers happening online, and we receive emails from people asking for help with resetting their logins, or for us to do the renewals for them. We’re also busier on the phones than usual. It goes without saying that we like this time of the year; in part, because we get to talk to lots of our customers.

Why is it so busy now? It has to do with MiFID first coming into effect in January 2018. People were given a grace period of a few months to get an LEI code, and because of this, there was a bit of a rush both before and after MiFID.

The global adoption of LEI codes means that people take the renewal of their LEI codes seriously. They appreciate that they can’t do basic things like trading or opening an account if their LEI isn’t valid. Expired LEI codes can create AML issues for the banks, and it may slow down their onboarding processes. Ultimately, this can have a real impact on your business.

So remember to renew your LEI codes - and let’s make this busy season a happy one for everyone involved.

We’re getting more retail bank referrals these days. It makes us feel pretty good about ourselves, and really, what’s not to like? We have the best technology platform and customer service of any LEI provider, and we provide banks with notification systems, watchlists, and other tools to ease their KYC processes and reporting. In short, we’re their one stop shop for anything LEI-code related. (In the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger in ‘True Lies’: ‘We’re cool, we’re badasses. Blah, blah, blah, blah.’)

However, there may be more at stake here. Retail banks seem to appreciate that LEI codes are here to stay, and up front customer adherence to compliance regulations is an advantage for them. Also, banks are more careful about following the rules because it has consequences when they don’t. Last but not least, cross-border payment legislation is around the corner, as per Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF) and the Financial Stability Board (FSB), and early adopters include India.

Perhaps that’s reading too much into an uptick in bank referrals. Maybe it really is the strength of our technology platform and good customer service. Maybe the banks know that by referring their customers to us, 1) they provide good customer service, and 2) save time and trouble themselves. And who doesn’t want that?
