My book's message has become more relevant 7 years later...

During his keynote at Uniting The Prairies, Brice mentioned my 2017 book How We Can Win: And What Happens to Us and Our Country If We Don't. He said it's even more relevant today.

Canada needs to change the way we think and talk about our own abilities — dream bigger, aim higher and go for gold, not bronze. 

The book explains what needs to be done to keep innovative entrepreneurs in the country, and what Canadians must do to ensure future prosperity. 

The biggest problem is not that Canada is a small country, but that we’re thinking too small.

Do you know what #skills are the most important for start-up entrepreneurs to succeed?

Our latest project with MindFrame Connect, a not-for-profit funded by Future Skills Centre - Centre des Compétences futures, and created by Dalhousie University, Toronto Metropolitan University, Innovation + Impact Network of Canada, and Globalive, involved over 150 mentors, mentees and entrepreneurs across Canada. 

As part of MindFrame Connect's research, three higher-order skills were identified as necessary for start-up #entrepreneurs: 

✅Self-awareness — understanding one’s strengths, weaknesses, motivation and behaviour. It can be fostered through coaching and mentorship, critical self-reflection, feedback, evaluation and mental performance skills. 

✅A growth mindset — the belief that personal attributes can be developed through dedication, effort and learning. Research indicates that a growth mindset is essential for entrepreneurial self-efficacy, as it increases the likelihood of taking on new challenges.

✅Resilience — the ability to overcome adversity, adapt to change and successfully navigate stressors. Social support is important in developing resilience, as having a supportive relationship can provide emotional support and assistance.

👥Mentors play a crucial role in the Canadian entrepreneurial ecosystem, transferring invaluable knowledge to new founders and prospective #entrepreneurs. However, research shows that women and racialized entrepreneurs are often disadvantaged in this network.
