Our app was difficult to navigate for blind and visually impaired users 👩🏽🦯 so we did something about it.

Visually Impaired users rely on VoiceOver, a gesture-based screen reader that enables people to experience the interface on their devices without having to see the screen, to navigate the digital space so to improve accessibility in our app, we identified 4 key areas in need of an overhaul:
✍🏼 Signing up
🏪 Exploring and choosing stores
🍔 Exploring and choosing items
💳 Completing orders

To improve these key touch points, we worked on the backend to ensure that VoiceOver functions were able to correctly read the text in the app. Our next step is to improve functionality for blind users in both the app and desktop versions of our platform.

These modifications are a significant step toward a more accessible app for blind and visually impaired users and in the coming months, we will take even more steps to make our app even more accessible

The World Health Organization estimates 1.3 billion people experience significant disability, representing 16% of the world’s population, or 1 in 6 of us. In the EU, only about half of people with disabilities are employed, compared to about 75% of persons without disabilities, according to the 2023 European Human Rights Report.

In Spain, we’re proud to announce that we’ve recently launched a scholarship program for individuals with diverse abilities to enter the workforce. In tandem with Abilities, our ERG aimed at making #Glovo more accessible to everyone by promoting disability awareness and Fundacion Human Age Institute, this inclusive opportunity will help to level the playing field for workers with disabilities.

Ismael, a People Care & Employee Relations Specialist at Glovo and a former program member at his previous company, shares, “My experience in the programme was incredible. I spent a year and a half in the programme and it allowed me to gain experience and go out into the job market with a more competitive profile. This was 10 years ago. Afterwards, thanks to the training I acquired, I was able to work in other companies as an employee and I have been working at Glovo for two years now, trying to make this programme work as well as possible. We are really looking forward to starting, especially because it was with the same foundation that I participated with years ago.”
