Sustainable travel is becoming an utopia - or?

Only a few months ago California-based Universal Hydrogen closed shop, and recently Air New Zealand removed its 2030 emissions reduction goal, dropping out of Science Based Targets initiative. Both due to lack of demand for sustainable jet fuel alternatives, or SAF availability or investments, but it all really boils down to the lack of demand.

At the same time, travel is back and beyond pre-pandemic levels and will only continue to increase. Ironically price has never been more important, so the race to the bottom continues. A good example is Wizz Air’s “All You Can Fly” subscription-based membership launch a few days ago 😣

So, what’s the way forward for sustainable travel then? 

One way forward could be the Chinese approach with strong subsidies that can propel us forward into a fossil-free era.

But that means relying on elected leaders to free us from our fossil dependency when flying on vacation or for business? I wouldn’t bet on it. Yes, the EU has begun mandating, but not nearly enough and we risk another Trump administration.

If we can’t rely on the industry to transform itself, nor regulators, the change must come from the market. To avoid sustainable travel becoming an utopia, we’ve got to solve the chicken and egg dilemma and once and for all demonstrate and signal strong demand so production volumes can increase, and the price of SAF can plummet.

It’s time to “B the Change”, we all want. 

To be able to travel the world without destroying it.

This will call on more business leaders to start flying on alternatives to fossil jet fuel.
