To kickoff #BlackHistoryMonth, Dei Robinson — a Googler and leader in our Black Googler Network (BGN) — discusses how Google is celebrating Black culture and #BHM 2024. This year's theme is Afrofuturism, and Dei spotlights some of Google's products, programs, and resources (along with the Googlers who brought them to life). Over 30,000 Googlers use gMentors — an internal passion project turned company-wide initiative — to find, or serve, as a mentor. In honor of #InternationalMentoringDay, we’ve asked Googlers to share how mentorship has helped them in their careers.

Rafee, an engagement manager in Google Cloud, explains, “The selfless mentoring and coaching I received from my manager shaped my career and led me to my mentoring journey. The satisfaction I get from seeing my mentees grow and do well in their careers is because of the commitment my manager showed me when I started my career.”

Serpe, an interaction designer, shares, “Seeking mentorship taught me the value of asking questions and leading with an inquiry. While it may seem simple, asking good questions takes time and practice to master. It begins with knowing what information to look for and who the best person is to ask.”

Originally planning to become a business analyst, Jyotsna — a Mountain View based Googler — reevaluated her career plan after losing her vision during her senior year of college. “As my dad and I brainstormed about what careers I would be interested in, we thought about accessibility testing,” she says. Soon after, Jyotsna was hired by Google as an Accessibility Analyst to make our products and #LifeAtGoogle more accessible for everyone. Her work ranges from providing assistive technology to including braille throughout our workplaces.

Meet Nicole Mikunda, a software engineering (SWE) intern based in Sydney, Australia! Nicole — a third-year computer science student — took an unexpected path to become a SWE. “I actually started as a data science student and had never done any programming before,” they explained. “But after taking my first CS course, I realised I enjoyed programming so much more and decided to transfer degrees. A year later, I’m so glad I made that decision.”

Over the course of their internship at Google, Nicole has been working to improve the efficiency of an identity verification tool used by individuals and organizations when they transfer large sums of money. Ultimately, this project will help prevent money laundering and financial fraud — an outcome that Nicole finds particularly fulfilling. “This is my first time ever coding something outside of a school assignment, so it feels really rewarding and motivating to be able to work on something bigger that has an impact on others.”

For more than two decades, we’ve called #GoogleChicago home – and now, we’re excited to share a first look at our plans for our new office at the iconic Thompson Center! 

We’re working with the building’s original architects to honor the Thompson Center’s postmodern legacy while upgrading it to a LEED Platinum all-electric building. Our goal is to run our offices and data centers on clean energy, 24/7. And yes, we’re definitely keeping the signature 17-story, light-filled atrium!

“With a new and improved CTA experience, the Thompson Center will continue to serve commuters and will be perfectly positioned to welcome current and future employees from every corner of Chicago,” says Karen, Google Chicago Site Lead. “And our hope is that this reimagined building becomes something more: a thriving community destination for all Chicagoans in a revitalized Loop neighborhood.”

Additionally, there will be enhancements to the ground floor including opportunities for more food and beverage, retail, and seasonal activations of the plaza for everyone.

Meet Soumya, a Software Engineer (and part-time dancer!) on our Search Experiences team.

Soumya’s focus has been on building new features: “This includes designing, implementing, and testing user journeys. Collaboration is at the heart of our process, and I work closely with a diverse team, including product managers, designers, and quality assurance professionals,” she says.

Joining Google full-time was an easy decision after Soumya’s experience as an intern. “The inclusive culture, the impactful work, and the supportive community made these moments an unforgettable and rewarding chapter in my professional journey,” she says.

In fact, Google’s culture is something Soumya actively contributes to. “Now, I proudly host and teach Bollywood dance workshops via gFit, offering Googlers a dynamic and engaging space to unwind,” she explains.
