As an MSc student in Exploration Geology at the Camborne School of Mines, University of Exeter, I recently had the incredible opportunity to embark on a geological field trip to Nevada, USA. This trip enabled me to witness the real world of mining! Throughout the trip, I got to visit several companies, working at various stages of the mining life cycle. This immersive experience provided a deep understanding of how the industry functions, from exploration and development to extraction and processing. Some of the companies I had the privilege of visiting include i-80 Gold Corp , Viva Gold Corp. (TSXV: VAU) (OTCQB: VAUCF) , Nevada Copper Corp (TSX:NCU) , Lion Copper & Gold and Great Western Mining Corp PLC . I even gained hands-on experience by logging diamond drill core, which is a crucial step in analyzing the potential of a mineral deposit. The trip underscored the vital role of geological surveys in mineral exploration. At Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology, witnessing their data collection and analysis deepened my appreciation for how they guide exploration efforts. Furthermore, a visit to ALS – Geochemistry & Metallurgy lab provided insights into the application of geochemistry, emphasizing the importance of Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) for ensuring reliable data that underpins informed decisions about potential mineral resources. I also participated in detailed field reconnaissance mapping exercises led by Dr Lawrence Carter . These exercises allowed me to explore the fascinating porphyry system within the Yerington district. A huge thank you to Benedikt S. Steiner and Edward Hill for planning and conducting this phenomenal trip.
