The Spark Tokenization Grand Prix, which opened for applications on August 12, 2024, invites participants to tokenize $1 billion in U.S. Treasury products, aiming to integrate real-world assets (RWAs) into the decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem. Notable financial and crypto players like BlackRock's BUIDL, Ondo Finance, and Superstate have shown significant interest. This initiative is part of #MakerDAO's strategy to enhance the utility and liquidity of its stablecoin DAI, by backing it with tokenized U.S. Treasuries. This effort is expected to diversify their treasury management and influence the broader RWA market.

Last week, the #crypto market saw significant volatility due to several key events. Donald Trump announced that the U.S. would retain $14.5 billion worth of #Bitcoin as a strategic reserve, while the U.S. government transferred $2 billion in Bitcoin, raising concerns about potential sell-offs. Economic data showed a cooling U.S. labor market, sparking concern over a global economic slowdown. Additionally, the Bank of Japan's interest rate hike exacerbated these concerns. Over the weekend, we added some additional concerns: the potential of war in the Middle East, rumors of Jump Trading exiting the crypto market, and declining odds of a Trump victory. The combination of all these worries culminated in the sharp sell-off we saw this morning.

For August, our strategy involves increasing exposure to #Bitcoin due to continuous ETF inflows and the removal of overhangs like the German government and Mt. Gox issues. Bitcoin dominance is also rising, which might lead to altcoins underperforming. #Ethereum remains overweighted as Grayscale outflows decrease and anticipation of a spot ETF launch grows. We're adding to our #Solana position as the protocol has been displaying undeniable strength through several usage metrics and fees accrued recently. Positions with less growth potential are being reduced, and NEAR has been removed due to recent loss of momentum.

Last week saw significant developments for #Bitcoin. At the Bitcoin Conference in Nashville, candidate #Trump made several promises that excited the market, and Senator Cynthia Lummis proposed a bill for a Bitcoin reserve to reduce the national debt. The State of Michigan Retirement System disclosed holdings in the ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF, joining other states in exploring crypto investments. Since hitting its all-time high of $73.8k in March, Bitcoin has been trading within the boundaries of a flag of which it is currently testing the upper range. In the long run, this flag is a bullish formation, with a breakout potentially pushing the price to $85k in the mid-term. However, there's also a risk of the price being rejected and dropping back down to test the lower boundary of the flag.

#Bitcoin's price rally correlates with the assassination attempt on U.S. Republican presidential candidate #Trump. Positive remarks from Trump and Republican VP candidate JD Vance's opposition to SEC Chairman Gary Gensler's regulatory stance have boosted optimism in the #crypto sector. The market anticipates #Ethereum spot ETFs on July 23, with a keen focus on Grayscale. Grayscale is converting its Ethereum Trust into ETHE and launching a lower-cost Mini Trust, offering a fee-free period until $2 billion is raised. However, 10% of ETHE holdings will transfer to the Mini Trust, filling $0.92 billion initially, limiting additional inflows under the fee waiver. #MtGox still holds $6 billion worth of Bitcoin, with a recent poll showing 20% of respondents planning to sell 100% of their BTC payouts. Although this poll doesn't represent all holders and lacks details on holding sizes, the holding pattern may alleviate fears of a major sell-off following last week's Bitcoin distribution.

Although 2024 is shaping up to be a rocky year, we've seen a great deal of positive developments since our 2024 Outlook report was published before the Bitcoin Halving. This progress has many believing that crypto markets look primed for a strong finish to 2024.
 
Historically, post-Halving, strong altcoins tend to outperform BTC. We still believe institutional investment and adoption will be a long-term structural tailwind for digital assets. Furthermore, we are placing even more emphasis on projects with strong product market fit, real-world usage, and traction. 

Now is the time to identify quality altcoins based on the aforementioned qualities.
