A recent study added to the research supporting the clinical utility of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) minimal residual disease (MRD) testing in patients with cancer. The article, “Circulating Tumor DNA: A promising biomarker for predicting recurrence in patients with BRAF-negative melanoma,” by Lauren Aoude and others, was published in the Journal of Molecular Diagnostics.  

The authors examined whether a ctDNA liquid biopsy (blood test) could be used to find targetable tumor mutations in patients who have late-stage melanoma, potentially leading to alternative treatments and improved outcomes for these patients.  

Key findings of the study: 
• ctDNA variants were detected in 85% of patients with BRAF-negative melanoma 
• Patients with stage IV melanoma who had low ctDNA concentrations had significantly better disease-specific survival and progression-free survival 
• Patients with a high ctDNA concentration and any detectable ctDNA variants had the worst prognosis 
• Changes in ctDNA concentration over time correlated with treatment response and disease progression 

The authors concluded that ctDNA liquid biopsies may be used to identify recurrent disease and detect targetable variants in patients with late-stage melanoma.
