#EmployeeSpotlight Joseph "Sam" Samaniego is working to develop the Helicity Drive proof of concept for Helicity Space. He comes to Helicity after working for NOAA and being stationed at the South Pole for 13 months. Sam's also worked with the Southwest Research Institute, NASA spacecraft missions, the Laboratory of Atmospheric and Space Physics, and the European Center for Particle Physics. He received his bachelor's from Boston University, earned a PhD in Plasma Diagnostics from the University of Colorado-Boulder. Sam also spent several seasons as a firefighter for Cal-Fire. Today is International Day for Human Space Flight. Last November, SwRI’s Dr. Alan Stern became the Institute’s first astronaut. Stern conducted suborbital research aboard Virgin Galactic’s commercial spacecraft VSS. Stern, who is principal investigator of NASA’s New Horizons mission, will take flight again this year to conduct two NASA experiments in space. #InternationalDayforHumanSpaceFlight
